The movie The Longest Day is probably the best portrayal of that event—it has John Wayne in it, as well as a few other stars. I was not born yet, al- though Mom and dad were in love at the time. Dad was flying cargo planes over the Hump in India to China and back, being shot at by Japanese. T oday is D-Day or at least the day we remember the invasion of the I have always been fascinated by our history and love seeing historical movies and reading the books about various historical events. I am sure I have forgotten more than I can remember about all of it. However, facts do keep popping up in my head from time- to-time. One thing that I always try to do is learn something new each day. Sometimes it is a new fact about some time way in the past, sometimes it is something dealing with the current situation and sometimes it is a trivial thing, but of interest anyway. I hope you remember what this day in history is and that all the kids in the U.S. know or learn its significance. I am sure it has more meaning for us older Americans than it does for the younger generation. This is summertime and I hope that the high school kids get some time for fun and relaxation as well as starting their training for fall sports. Both are important items. There are some "do not" items that you, as student-athletes, must not do. One, is drink alcoholic beverages and another is smoke. Both are bad for you and both are against the rules even in the summertime. I know some people had to sit out some events in the spring because they were caught drinking or smoking. Remember, you are still subject to the rules for student-athletes even though it is the summer time. If you are caught by law enforcement or school personnel violating one of the rules, you will have to suffer the penalties. So parents, help your kids remember as well!!! All the student-athletes signed this agreement saying they will abide by it or suffer the consequences. Some of the policies are— 1. I will not use or possess tobacco related products. 2. That time was among the top No. 4 runner times in the state in the Regionals and set the stage for his being selected to fill out the field of 27. The top three runners in each of the eight Region- als qualify automatically for state. The top No. 4 runners are selected to fill the field to 27 runners in the state meet. Two other runners had faster times in the fourth place spot at 4:17.56 and 4:25.67 and he tied with Jacob Reinking of Fort Wayne Concordia for that third and final spot. Both runners were added to the state field. Reinking finished one spot and a little more than a second in front of Parker. Parker's time was 4:23.64, a new school record breaking his own record set in the Regional and the school record of G. Carlisle of 4:31.25 set in 1986. The 19th place finish was above nine other runners including one that did not finish. In 20th was Jonathan Reynolds of North Har- rison at 4:24.59; 21st was Aaron Tichner of Martinsville at 4:25.95. Andrew Kump of West Vigo, third in the Evansville Regional, was 23rd at 4:26.65; Logan Hambrock of Terre Haute South, a second at the Evansville Regional, was 25th at 4:29.83. Tyler Schickel, first in the Evansville Regional, finished in seventh place with a time of 4:12.92. First went to Jason Crist of Franklin Central at 4:09.12. The state record is 4:03.00 set by Aus- tin Mudd of Center Grave in 2011. "I did better than I thought I could. It was a very neat experi- ence and I hope to go back next year," said Parker. He also has set as a goal of getting to state in cross country in the fall. He has been to the cross country Semistate finish- ing 41st last year and 91st the year before. His goal is to get in the top 15 at Semistate to qualify for state. "I was nervous when I first got there and warming up for the event. But when race time came I forgot about being nervous and just went out and ran," said Parker. "I want to thank everyone that went to state to cheer me on and that worked with me the past week to get ready for state. Their help is appreciated." Among those working with Parker was Andrew Dixon, a for- mer state qualifier for the Char- gers in the 3,200 meter event. He helped Parker train and gave him tips about running in the state track meet. Dixon started working with him before the PAC Meet in early May. Former Charger run- ner Joey Chamberlain also lent a hand. Dixon ran cross country and trained at the University of South- ern Indiana and Chamberlain ran cross country at USI. He also had the help of Track Coaches Randy Meece, Steve Wilson and Kyle McCutchan and several other of the Chargers in preparing for state. He had other teammates run- ning with him to train for state in- cluding Paul Heldring and Chris- tian Wilson. "They all helped me get ready for state and I appreciate their help," added Parker. Parker does a lot of training in the off season as well running 50 to 60 miles and running some road races and 5K events. He won the NHS 5K in early May and will run in a few events this summer. He took only a few days off after cross country season to prepare for the track season, running throughout the mild winter. He said the milder temperatures this winter made it a little easier to train in. and I hope to go to state in cross country and track next year," Parker said. "I really appreciate the number of people from Pike County making the trip to state to cheer me on, it really helped. It was a great experience and I want to go back."
