B-2 Sports Wednesday, December 16, 2015 The Press-Dispatch us. We are young with only one senior wrestling, but we have to mature fast- er if we want to be a good as possible as a team." "The good thing is that the effort was there," Hewig added. "We just have to be more mentally ready to go than we were during certain du- al meets. We were a one-match swing away from beating North Posey and tying Gibson Southern, which is frus- trating, but that is where our inexpe- rience comes into play." Individually, junior Jaylon Owens – wrestling at 170 pounds – went 8 -0 with five wins by pin, one win by de- cision and two wins by forfeit. Owens remained undefeated at 15 -0 with a team-high 11 wins by pin. Wrestling at 220 pounds, sopho- more Jacob Sisk also went 8 -0, record- ing two wins by pin, one win by ma- jor decision and five wins by forfeit to remain undefeated at 15 -0 with eight wins by pin. Junior Colton O'Neal, meanwhile, went 7-1 with five wins by pin, one win by decision and one win by for- feit, giving him a record of 13-2 with eight wins by pin. In addition, sophomores Silas Goff and Dylan Jones both went 6 -2. Goff, wrestling at 285 pounds, had four wins by pin and two wins by forfeit to im- prove to 11-4 with eight wins by pin. Jones, wrestling at 120 pounds, had one win by pin, one win by decision and four wins by forfeit to improve to 11-4 with six wins by pin. "They all really had a good week- end," Hewig said of Owens, Sisk, O'Neal, Goff and Jones. "They got some big wins for us and scored a lot of points." Sophomore Christian Alvey, wres- tling at 195 pounds, went 5 -3 with one win by pin and four wins by forfeit to improve to 11-4 with four wins by pin. Junior Blake Carroll won four of his first six bouts at 145 pounds – on three wins by pin and one win by forfeit – be- fore being forced to default his match against Gibson Southern sophomore Austin Kane due to an injury that side- lined him for the Chargers' final du- al against North Posey. Carroll im- proved to 6 -7 on the season with four wins by pin. Sophomore Jermia Greer, wrestling at 132 pounds, went 4-4 with one win by pin – his first of the season – and three wins by forfeit. He is now 8 -7. "We are progressing and moving in the right direction," Hewig said. "I am proud of the young men that came in and represented our school so well over the weekend." Pike Central will participate, along with Daviess County (Ky.), in a tri- meet hosted by Owensboro (Ky.) on Thursday, Dec. 17, with weigh-in start- ing at 6 p.m. The Chargers will then compete in the Mustang Classic Du- als hosted by New Washington on Sat- urday, Dec. 26. Sisk named Marsh Athlete of the Month Pike Central High School freshman wrestler Jake Sisk and Bluffton's Jaimee Jaskie were named Marsh Athletes of the Month for November, according to an article published by the In- dianapolis Star on Friday, Dec. 11. Sisk, who received more than 62 percent of the al- most 100,000 votes cast on the boys' side, was recog- nized as an All-USA Athlete of the Week in wrestling for Nov. 22-28 after recording three pins in three matches and going two weeks with- out allowing a point being scored against him. Lafayette Central Cath- olic's Brandon Yeagy, who was the football athlete of the week Nov. 22-28, was second in the balloting, while Pike Central junior Jaylon Owens – wrestling athlete of the week for Nov. 15 -21 - was third, with each receiving more than 10,000 votes. Jaskie was the second consecutive bowler to win the girls' athlete of the month honor, receiving more than 50 percent of the vote after being named ath- lete of the week for Nov. 8 - 14 for the top score of the week (268) and top series of the season (515). The Marsh Athlete of the Month is part of the India- napolis Star's new Indiana Sports Awards program aimed at bringing state- wide recognition to high school athletes and sports in Indiana. To be eligible for Athlete of the Month, an athlete must be nominated by an athletic department representative. The Star chooses a winner in each sport for the weekly honor. Ed Cahill photo Southridge routs Lady Chargers, 62-19 By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central High School girls' basketball team saw its three-game winning streak come to an abrupt end with a 62-19 loss at Southridge on Thursday, Dec. 10. Pike Central went 0 -for-6 from the field and turned the ball over six times in the first quarter as Southridge took a 14-0 lead. The Lady Chargers fared little bet- ter in the second period, making just one of six field goal attempts – a lay-up by sophomore guard Brook Nalley that cut the Lady Raiders' lead to 14-2 with 7:07 left in the first half – and turning the ball over another half dozen times while falling behind 28 -3 at the inter- mission. During the first two quarters, Pike Central was a combined 1-for-12 from the field – an 8.3 percent average – and made just one of five tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 12 times. "We just weren't ready," said Pike Central head coach Shawn Warner, whose Lady Chargers fell to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in the Pocket Athletic Confer- ence. "We called timeout early, ripped them a little bit, hoping that would get them fired up. It was just one of those nights." Southridge, which improved to 9 - 1 overall and 4-0 in the PAC with its eighth consecutive win, won for the seventh straight time against the La- dy Chargers. "Like I told them in the locker room, against really good teams, you have to step off the bus and be ready to go," Warner said. "I don't really feel like we were." "Some of that's on me, some of that's on the girls," Warner continued. "We just weren't ready to go from the tip. A couple of things went wrong, some heads started hanging, and we kind of reverted to our old ways a little bit. That's just something that we have to get out of and move on." A fter senior guard Kayla Voegerl scored to extend Southridge's lead to 30 -3, Pike Central answered with back- to-back baskets by sophomore center Erika Hendrixson and Nalley to narrow the deficit to 30 -7 with 6:34 left in the third period. The Lady Raiders then rattled off 13 straight points – four by Voegerl, four by senior guard Kadie Dearing, three by senior forward Taylor Neukam and two by senior center Sydney Altmeyer – to stretch their lead to 43-7 with 2:52 remaining in the third quarter. Southridge later extended its lead to as many as 47 points – at 62-15 with 56.3 seconds left in the game – before back- to-back baskets by Pike Central senior Cheyanna Padgett ended the scoring. "We just really weren't ready to play from the start," Warner said. "Offen- sively, tonight, we never got into a rhythm. We weren't using screens how we like to use them. We were kind of walking into screens, walking on cuts, not doing things the way we want to do them. And it kind of spiraled into that." "We weren't very confident tonight at all," Warner added. "Against a team like this, you have to believe you can win." Hendrixson, Nalley, Padgett and ju- nior Jo Whitehead led Pike Central with four points each while sophomore Audra Stone netted three points. Hen- drixson and Whitehead both had four rebounds while Nalley had a game-high four steals. For the game, the Lady Chargers made eight of 34 field goal attempts – a 23.5 percent average – and hit two of nine tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 21 times. "We only shot the ball 34 times," Warner noted. "That's about half of what we're trying to get up in a game. If you only get 34 shots up, you better make a lot of them, because you're not going to score many points if you don't." Southridge, meanwhile, was led in scoring by Voegerl, who netted 18 points, while Dearing and Neukam add- ed 15 points and 10 points, respective- ly. Junior forward Kendyl McKeough had eight points. For the game, the Lady Raiders made 25 of 41 field goal attempts – a 61 per- cent average – and hit eight of 16 tries from the free throw line while turning the ball over 12 times. "They're a really, really good basket- ball team," Warner said of Southridge. "They're senior-led. They know what to do. They know where everyone's at. They run that offense really well. They've ran it for four years." Warner described Voegerl, Dearing and Altmeyer as "very, very nice play- ers." "I'll be glad whenever they're gone," Warner said, half-jokingly. "They can really play. They're tough to keep in front. They keep them under control. They play good on the defensive end. I mean, it's a very, very nice team. I con- sider them probably the best in our con- ference." Warner said that he hoped that the Lady Chargers would be able to learn something from the 43-point loss. "We're young, we'll learn," Warner said. "We'll go back and look at the film of it. We'll point out their mistakes, break it down. Obviously, we're proba- bly going to have a really rough one to- morrow at practice, instill some things in their heads, that we've got to start do- ing things the right way instead of how things went tonight. We'll just get back at it tomorrow." Pike Central, which hosted North- east Dubois on Tuesday, Dec. 15, will travel to Gibson Southern on Thursday, Dec. 17, before returning home to host North Knox on Saturday, Dec. 19. The Lady Chargers will then host Jasper on Tuesday, Dec. 22. • In junior varsity action, fresh- men Becca Crow and Hailey Marchi- no scored 13 points each to lead Pike Central to a 41-31 win over South- ridge.
