Poplar Street, Petersburg By Ed Cahill Press-Dispatch Sports Editor sports@pressdispatch.net The Pike Central High School wres- tling team won five of eight matches to place fourth in the Pocket Athletic Con- ference Duels held at Tell City on Fri- day, Dec. 11, and Saturday, Dec. 12. Southridge posted first- place finishes in eight of the meet's 12 events but Pike Central – which won the re- maining four events – had a total of 17 second-, third- and fourth-place finishes to the Lady Raiders' seven. As a result, the Lady Char- gers placed first as a team with a total of 131 points, edging Southridge's 116 points. South Spencer was a distant third with 72 points. Pike Central, which placed first among five teams dur- ing the Tecumseh Relays on Saturday, Dec. 5, improved to 11-2 on the season. "We've been preaching that depth all year, and the strength of our depth," said Lady Chargers head coach Jason McKinney. "It's just fi- nally starting to show. We're going up against some pret- ty good teams, and numbers are maybe down a little bit on theirs, but we're on the upside of our numbers and the depth is a lot better than we've had in the past – both the boys and girls – and it's just hard to beat that." Freshman Natalie Bohnert broke her own school re- cords while placing first in the 100 -yard butterfly with a time of 1:06.68 (besting her previous mark of 1:07.06) and first in the 100 -yard backstroke in 1:04.97 (best- FOCUSED CHARGERS ROLL PAST SOUTHRIDGE, 65-55 Lady Chargers use depth to overcome Southridge Owens, Sisk remain unbeaten as Chargers place fourth at PAC Duals See DEPTH on page 4 See UNBEATEN on page 2 Pike Central High School junior Trey Wornica (with ball) goes up for a shot over South- ridge senior Gaage Fetter (left) during varsity game action on Saturday, Dec. 12. However, the Chargers' 65 -55 victory over visit- ing Southridge on Saturday, Dec. 12, showed just how much difference a week can make. Scoring the game's first nine points, Pike Cen- tral hit 12 of 15 field goal attempts – including two three-point shots by senior forward Tyler Toopes – while racing to a 28 -6 lead at the end of the first quarter. Trailing 43-22 at halftime, Southridge would pull to within 62-53 with 1:26 left in the fourth period before Toopes and junior guard Trey Wornica com- bined to hit three of four tries from the free throw line in the game's final minute to seal the win. "We had a pretty good week of practice, but I didn't know what to expect," said Roach, whose Chargers – after opening the season with road wins at Northeast Dubois and Princeton – improved to 3- 0 overall and 1-0 in the Pocket Athletic Conference. "I didn't know if we were going to come out on fire like that, but it was really our intensity and our hard work on defense that led to some of those baskets." "The kids were just focused," the second-year head coach added. "They were raring to go. They executed the game plan pretty well and came out on fire." Toopes, who tied Wornica and sophomore Bry- ant Nalley with a team-high four steals while scor- ing a game-high 23 point, agreed. "He (Roach) told us multiple times that we just can't come out and beat anybody, that we have to be focused and come out and play hard every pos- session," said Toopes, who also blocked two shots and grabbed six rebounds. "I think we came out and we did that tonight." The win marks the first time Pike Central has See ROLL on page 3
