The Press-Dispatch Wednesday, March 21, 2012 A-9 'The Hall of Famers and One Oddball' leading the way in Biggest Loser contest By Alden Heuring Eddie and Beverly Hall started a fit- ness routine about a year ago at the urging of their doctor. Today, they're walking five or more miles a day, six days a week, and are in the running for first place in a Biggest Loser contest at The Zone in Petersburg. "We only have two weeks left for the competition, and we've kept a pretty good pace as a team," Hall said. He has lost 26 pounds in the last month, and his wife Beverly has lost 15. "Our team is The Hall of Famers and One Oddball, and we've been really close rivals with The Fearless Foursome. We've defi- nitely lost the most weight, but it's not about pounds, it's about body fat per- centage. Even though the Foursome is our main rival, the scores are all close enough that it's anyone's game. It'll def- initely come down to the last week." Hall said he harbors no ill will to- wards the Fearless Foursome or any of the other rival teams—he's glad ev- eryone in the competition is working on being healthy and losing weight. However, he said, he does have a bit of a competitive streak: "It's not that we want them to lose— it's that we want to win," he laughed. While Eddie and his team's efforts are focused on winning the Biggest Loser contest at the moment, fitness and health are things the Halls have been striving for since last April. "The doctor told me if I didn't do something, my blood pres- sure pills wouldn't cut it," Eddie said. "I started only able to walk around the park once a day be- fore I was out of breath, but we started taking baby steps and working our way up." Now, Eddie and Bever- ly walk at least six days a week, and anywhere from five to 12 miles each day. "We spent a lot of time at the gym, do- ing treadmills and el- lipticals and riding bikes," he said, "and we try to mix it up a little bit—we have lots of different plac- es around town where we walk." In addition to an exten- sive regimen of exercise, Eddie and Beverly have taken steps to eat healthier as well. "We're not on a specific diet, but we try to watch what we eat and Healthya Pike County JAG students from Pike Central High School brought home several hon- ors from the Region 11 competition at Vincennes University Gibson County Center. "Once a week, we'll eat what we want to eat, so as not to burn out on our routine—but then we get right back on it the next day." Beverly shared a few of the healthy changes she and Eddie have made to their diet. "Getting rid of breads, sweets, and sodas has been the biggest thing," she said. "We watch our calories, and we eat a lot of poultry and frozen veggies now— not canned veggies, because those have lots of sodium." "She's a great cook, so I'm not missing out on anything," Eddie laughed. Two other things the Halls said were impor- tant to their fitness plan: goals and faith. "My wife and I would like to be able to look at our wed- ding picture and see what we saw back then," Eddie said. "There's no doubt in my mind we can do it—I still have 65 more pounds to lose, Eddie and Beverly Hall take their daily walk at Hornady Park. but I'm already halfway. My healthy lifestyle didn't start, though, until I got my relationship with my Lord right. My faith is definitely a big part of my lifestyle, and I couldn't do any of what I'm doing without His help." Share your story online and read about Pike County residents getting in shape.
