By Ginger Rogers We appreciated seeing over 300 guests at the li- brary's Grand Opening on Saturday, March 10. First, we appreciated Vance Hayes and the Swing Choir. I had heard nothing but good things about the group since I came to Pike County, and I certainly was not disappointed. The har- monies and the solos, Hayes playing, and the song selec- tion were all outstanding. Second, to Alycia Church of the Chamber of Com- merce for providing the rib- bon cutting, I had to laugh a little at the fact that the scissors weren't real scis- sors, and we didn't really cut anything, but it's a sym- bolic gesture, a moment captured on camera, and we'd all been in and out that door many times for the last three months anyway. But now the doors are officially "open" in every way. Third, I prepared a speech for the occasion, but chickened out of actual- ly giving it, which enabled everyone to go back in and have cake and other refresh- ments sooner. Frank Cassell and his wife were absolutely charm- ing, and gave far more than the scheduled hour of their time, as they talked, au- tographed copies of their book, and answered ques- tions throughout the entire day, with anyone and every- one who was interested. There was a crowd with them back in the Genealo- gy area the entire day. I did read Josie and Salem my- self, and I have to tell you, I cried at the end. I wasn't ex- pecting the tragic but beau- tiful ending. We ran out of copies that day, but we do have more now, for those of you who still wanted one. It's a couple of dollars less if you buy it here than if you get it through Amazon, and with no shipping. We appreciated Susan Stafford for reading the Dr. Seuss books to the children, and also our staff mem- bers, Janet Blaize and Cin- dy Sermersheim for keeping the children entertained. Michael Cochren was also a nice surprise. I really liked his song selections and his singing and playing style: a really nice mix of contempo- rary sound with smooth de- livery. Also, we appreciated Phil Spaulding for playing, sing- ing, and telling jokes lon- ger than his allotted time, I know he liked being here, in spite of the goose egg he re- ceived while unpacking. We also appreciated the The Press-Dispatch for their coverage of the event. I'm nearing the end of my assigned reading list for my Young Adult Literature class. I've been a little less enthusiastic about some last several books on our list, one dealing with suicide, one with a runaway, one about a young autistic man, one about the depressing conditions on Native Amer- ican reservations. Not that the books weren't well-written, or that I didn't like reading them at all, not that I didn't see lessons to be learned in them, but af- ter all that, our latest pick: Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins, was a breath of fresh (April in Par- is) air. Romance is not usual- ly my first choice of genres, and especially not Young Adult Romance, but again, maybe it's the fact that I read a light-hearted piece af- ter all that heavy depressing literature that caused me to really like this book. Not only do I now wish that I could go to Paris. I want to spend every night watching American Mov- ie classics and I'm remem- bering what it was like to first fall in love. It has all the frustrations of an Amer- ican romantic comedy, and it keeps you guessing till the end if things are every going to work out for this couple— and I'll not spoil it by telling Heating & Cooling 812-354-4273 Myers Same as Cash Financing SPRING BREAK SPECIAL BRENT MYERS OWNER CONGRATULATIONS to our team of Biggest Losers for Weeks 5: The Hall of Famers and One Odd Ball 24-HOUR ACCESS TO FITNESS CENTER WITH KEY MEMBERSHIP 24-HOUR ACCESS TO FITN the T ESS CENTE 604 East Illinois St., Petersburg (near the Little League Park) 354-1303 Fitness Center Hours: Mon - Thurs 10–8 Fri 10–7 • Sat 10–2 • Closed Sunday you whether it did or not.
