Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, spread Christi- anity in the fifth century, helping people abandon pa- gan rites. One day, he was baptizing new converts, in- cluding the chief of a fierce warrior tribe. Patrick leaned on his staff for support as he lowered each person into the rushing river. As he bap- tized the chief, he inadver- tently pressed his staff firm- ly down on the chief's foot. The chief uttered not a word of complaint, but as he stepped back onto the bank, people noticed he was limp- ing. Patrick apologized, ask- ing, "Why did you cry out when I struck your foot?" The chief replied, "I re- member you telling us about the nails in the cross. I thought pain was part of my baptism."—Homiletics Church phone—354-6844 Boyd Heldring, Pastor Amy Melhiser, Reporter burg United Methodist Church. March 31—Petersburg Free Methodist Church. Last week's Trivia ques- tion: Jesus spent so much of his traveling ministry here it became almost like his second home—where? Answer: Capernaum— Matthew 4; Mark 2. Next week's question: When we say the word Amen, what does it imply? Hint—Revelation 3. Mini Message: Heroic actions Jesus was born to be a hero, to be the Savior of the world. God doesn't need us all to be heroes. Christians have different gifts, abilities. experience and maturity. God doesn't expect us all to act the same or use our gifts exactly as someone else does. But he does expect to use what we have to persevere in using our resources for him, to obey and hold on tightly to the strength he gives us. Doing your best in serving God is heroic actions on our part. Don't settle for following God halfway. Let Christ fire up your faith and get you into action. You too can serve heroically. Until Next Week—Don't be a wimp, be a hero! Fred Faith, Deacon Kathy Miller, Reporter PETERSBURG HOLINESS CHURCH 5317 N. Craig Line, Pastor Betty Decker, Reporter Continued on page 4 True liberty By Cornelius R. Stam As true Americans celebrate their liberty, true Christians should rejoice in the even great- er liberty which they have in Christ. Our Lord said: "Ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free" and "If the Son, therefore, shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed" (John 8:32, 36). Likewise St. Paul de- clares that believers in Christ have been made "free from sin" and have become "servants to God," who deals with us in grace (Romans 6:22). It is strange that so many sincere religious people actually wish to be in bondage to the Mo- saic Law, which can on- ly judge and condemn them for their sins. Peter called the law: "a yoke . . . which neither our fa- thers nor we were able to bear" (Acts 15:10). Paul called it "the handwrit- ing of decrees, that was against us, which was contrary to us" (Colos- sians 2:14). He called it "the ministration of death" and "the min- istration of condemna- tion" (II Corinthians 3:7, 9). He challenged those who "desired" to be un- der the law: "Tell me, ye that de- sire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law?" (Galatians 4:21). "For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse; for it is written. Cursed is ev- ery one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law, to do them" (Galatians 3:10). Thank God, "Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, be- ing made a curse for us" (Galatians 3:13). Man al- ways responds better to grace than to law. The law was "added because of transgressions" (Ga- latians 3:19). "By the law is the knowledge of sin" (Romans 3:20). But Christ died for our sins and now true believers serve God from grat- itude and love. Hence Romans 6:14 says: "Sin shall not have dominion over you, for ye are not under the law but un- der grace." Since Christ has redeemed us from the law (Galatians 4:5) God says to every true believer: "Stand fast, therefore, in the liberty where- with Christ hath made us free, and be not en- tangled again with the yoke of bondage" (Gala- tians 5:1). C-1 FILES OUT OF THE PAST Religious viewpoint "Obama wants to By Clyde Dupin control the church" Christianity is under at- tack by President Obama. His religious background is very thin, at best. His ear- ly years were spent in Indo- nesia, which has the larg- est Muslim population in the world. Some of his ear- ly schooling was in a Mus- lim school and then in pub- lic school and 20 years of church attendance at Jere- miah Wright's church with the teaching of black liber- ation theology. This helps explain why he does not re- spect the Catholic Church and its core values and the- ology. Most Americans have been against Obama Care and socialism in general. The mandate to provide the abortion pill, sterilization and contraception violates the Constitution by taking the churches liberty to be- lieve and live their faith un- hindered by government. Many other religious groups have spoken out against this violation of the First Amend- ment to the Constitution. This Obama mandate is an assault on the principles of religious liberty. This Obama mandate forces Catholic institutions and others, against their conscience, to pay for things they consider immoral. Sim- ilar state mandates were drafted by the ACLU. The largest provider of abortions is Planned Parenthood. You can expect Planned parent- hood and the ACLU to fight and misrepresent the First Amendment. Many are con- fused about this mandate and the liberal media and Chicago gangs will influ- ence many good people. Continued on page 4 STOP WASTING TIME & MONEY!
