BACK YARD BBQ COMPETITION Saturday, March 17 Chili tasting 11:30 .m.-1:30 p.m., $3 per person. Taste and vote! Over $1000 in cash and trophies. Categories and judging times: Chili (people's choice) 11:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.; chicken 2 p.m.; pork ribs 3 p.m. Pickup rules, regulations, and registration forms at Spud's Food mart, The Shamrock Café, and The Chicken Place. Check in 7-9 a.m. at Chicken Place parking lot—rain, snow or shine. Contest is limited to first 18 paid entries. O'BLARNEY KIDS' GAMES Saturday, March 17 Ireland Fire Station, 9 a.m.-noon. Activities include basketball shoot, money machine, duck pond, shamrock, face painting, and ring toss. IRISH O'DUCKY RACE Saturday, March 17 First race begins at noon. The object of the race is to have your Irish Duck cross the finish line first! Ducks will be put in alder Creek about 1,000 feet north of Hwy 56 bridge on St. Mary's property. Ducks available throughout the celebration for a donation of $2 apiece. Prizes will be awarded. Several races may be conducted depending on how many ducks are entered. Duck numbers will be assigned before each race begins. IRISH TROT 5K RUN/WALK Saturday, March 17 Ireland Elementary School at 8 a.m. $50 prize will be awarded to the top male and female finishers. All proceeds are donated to Ireland Community Projects. IRELAND BLESSING OF THE BIKES Saturday, March 17 Star Touring and Riding Chapter 319 will host a Blessing of the Bikes at St. Mary Church in Ireland, IN. The blessing will be conducted at 1 p.m. EST in the South parking lot of the church. A 90 mile Lucky Leprechaun Ride will follow the blessing. The Druids put him in jail on numerous occasions. r Green is not the official color affiliated with Saint Patrick. It is really blue. However, green became a familiar hue during the nineteenth century more for being associated with the magic of Irish legends than Saint Patrick himself. r The three-leaf shamrock has more historical significance with regards to Saint Patrick's day than a four-leaf clover. That's because the three leaves were believed to be used by St. Patrick to explain the Christian doctrine of the Holy Trinity, where God exists as three persons. r For 67 years, Saint Patrick's Day was a "dry" holiday in Ireland. James O'Mara, a member of Irish parliament, introduced a bill in 1903 that made Saint Patrick's Day a religious holiday in the country. Therefore, local pubs were obligated to close.
