The Press-Dispatch By Mike Johansen Kenna Longabuagh and Kari Lemond are the del- egates from Pike Central High School and Rebecca Lee and Desiree Gerard are the alternates to the 2012 Hoosier Girls State in Terre Haute. The American Legion Auxiliary is the sponsor of the Indiana Hoosier Girls State program. Local spon- sors also include Psi Iota Xi Sorority, Petersburg VFW and the Petersburg VFW Ladies/Mens Auxiliary. Longabaugh, Lemond, Lee and Gerard will rep- resent Pike Central High School and the local spon- soring organizations at Hoosier Girls State at Indi- ana State University June 17 through June 23. Kenna Longabuagh and Kari Lemond will be going to Girls State with Rebecca Lee and Desiree Gerard the alternates in case one or the other cannot attend or an- other Post needs someone to fill in. The four young women were recommended by the Pike Central High School administration and select- ed by the sponsoring orga- nizations. To be eligible girls must be in the junior class in high school; be in the upper half of the class academically. They must be interested in government, have leader- ship abilities; be honest and possess good character. Hoosier Girls State is a program designed to edu- cate young women of Indi- ana in the duties, privileg- es, rights and responsibil- ities of citizenship. It is a week of living and learning the political system of Indi- ana through a mythical City, County and State. The young women chosen for this honor by an Amer- ican Legion Auxiliary Unit are named as delegates to Hoosier Girls State. In ad- dition, an American Legion Auxiliary Unit may desig- nate other young women to serve as alternates in case a delegate cannot attend the Hoosier Girls session. Once delegates arrive and register, they become citi- zens of Hoosier Girls State and are assigned to one of the two political parties, Federalist or Nationalist. (This name change is nec- essary since citizens are elected as delegates for po- litical party activities.) Citi- zens learn the political party structure and every citizen files and campaigns for an elective office. Once elect- ed, they serve in that office. Eligibility for Hoosier Girls State requires a Girls State Delegate should be enrolled in an Indiana high school or state certified home school, be in the ju- nior class, be in the upper half of her class academi- cally, and be sponsored by an American Legion Auxil- iary Unit, Department of In- diana. Qualifications for HGS, includes that a Delegate shall be interested in gov- ernment, have leadership abilities, be honest and pos- sess good character. She shall show proper respect to the U. S. Flag and have a love for God and Country. Expectations of HGS del- egates, include staying the entire HGS session, show- ing respect for the Ameri- can Flag; participating in all aspects of the sched- uled program; following the guidelines and rules of the HGS Board and Indi- ana State University; giving proper respect to all staff members and all other HGS delegates. Love for God and Country will be broadened by inspirational Flag cer- emonies and non-denomi- national religious services held during the HGS week and all participants are ex- pected to attend these pro- grams. Citizenship, not pol- itics, is emphasized at Girls State, and competition for elective office is the means to an end, not the goal. There are several honors made during the week and scholarships will be avail- able. Some girls will be se- lected as delegates to Girls Nation. Honors include Out- standing Girl; Good Citizen; Samsung/American Legion Scholarship winner; Good Citizen Award; Outstanding County Official; Outstand- ing Senator and Represen- tative; Outstanding Party Worker; HGS Staff Scholar- ship; Walker-White Newspa- per Editorial Award; along with other awards and schol- arships. The motto is "Serving Those Who Served, An American Tradition". Wednesday, March 14, 2012 A-9 Girls State representatives selected at Pike Central The candidates from Pike Central High School for Hoosier Girls State that will take place the third week of June at Indiana State University in Terre Haute have been selected. The delegates, seated, are Kari Lemond and Ken- na Longabuagh. The Alternates are: Rebecca Lee and Desiree Gerrard. Boys State representative selected for Pike Central By Mike Johansen Pike Central High School juniors Jeffrey Estey and Tanner Gray have been se- lected as a delegates and Ethan Rolens as the alter- nate to the 75th annual Hoo- sier Boys State next June. The Petersburg Kiwanis Club and Petersburg VFW Coleman-Stewart Post 3587 provides the tuition for the delegates to attend the an- nual Boys State Program. The 75th annual Hoosier Boys State will be held at Trine University in Angola on June 10-16 with more than 600 young men attending. This is the second year for Indiana Boys State at Trine University, it had been held at Indiana State University. HBS officially starts on Sunday, June 10, at 1 p.m. and will go on until Saturday morning, June 16. Estey, Gray and Rolens are recommended by the Pike Central High School admin- istration. Rolens is the alter- nate and will go if one of the other two cannot attend or another opening is created from another area. "We are looking forward to this opportunity and it should be a great experience," the three said. "This is a great opportunity and we appreci- ate the American Legion and Kiwanis Club for the chance to go to Boys State." To be eligible students must have completed their junior year in high school and have at least one semes- ter left in school. They must show outstanding qualities of leadership, character, schol- arship, loyalty and service to their schools. The mission of our pro- Pike Central High School has selected its representatives to Hoosier Boys State taking place this June at Trine University. The delegates (seated) are Tanner Gray and Jeffrey Estey. Ethan Rolens will be the alternate. gram is to provide young men an opportunity to learn how politics impact our dai- ly lives. From the very af- ternoon delegates arrive un- til the time they go home they will experience, first- hand, how Indiana's govern- ment process works by ac- tively participating in a sim- ulated government setup. By the time they leave, they will know more about our state government than 90 percent of their fellow Hoosiers. This is not your normal classroom study session. They will have an opportuni- ty to run for offices of their choice from the local up to state level positions. To win an office delegates will have to interact with over 600 peers and earn their votes, compromise and negotiate to get bills passed, and follow laws and procedures set up by their own establishment. Just like in real life! Indiana Boys State has had such people as former Vice President Richard Cheney; U.S. Senator Richard Lugar; Neil Armstrong, first astro- naut to walk on the moon; Tom Brokaw, TV personal- ity; Roger Ebert, Pulitzer Prize winner for literary crit- icism and movie critic; and Michael Jordan, profession- al basketball player attend a program. The delegate will have a chance to win college schol- arships during Boys State as well as learn about the ba- sic fundamentals, structure and operation of government. They begin at a city level gov- ernment up to state level gov- ernment. Participants can be elected to any number of po- sitions from a mayor to gov- ernor of Boys State. The young men have the opportunity to apply what they learn. Government classes are supervised by high school teachers, university instruc- tors and members of the Indi- ana General Assembly. They teach the workings of politi- cal system, the various offic- es held at each level of gov- ernment, and the duties and responsibilities associated with each office. They will operate an ex- ecutive, judicial and legisla- tive branch of government. The boys elect the boys who will serve in the various of- fices including Governor of Hoosier Boys State. They also have a chance at near- ly $13,000 in college schol- arships. The McHale, Kos- sa, McKeeman, Carson and Samsung scholarships are awarded top citizens based on their academic, social and Boys State activities and per- formance. There will be more than 600 boys attending this sum- mer and the tuition is paid by the Petersburg Kiwanis Club and the Petersburg VFW for the delegates from Pike Cen- tral High School. The Indiana Depart- ment of The American Le- gion soon followed their Illi- nois neighbor and had their first "Boys State" program in 1937 at the field house of Butler University. The pro- gram originally started with over 500 delegates in atten- dance and elected Lloyd Wampler as the first Hoosier Boys State Governor. Since then, Hoosier Boys' State has been conducted annual- ly with the exception of 1945 when World War II restric- tions forced a suspension of activities. Hoosier Boys' State has had many "homes" since 1937; with Trine Uni- versity in Angola, Indiana being it's most recent host. Other sites have been: But- ler University, Indiana State Fairgrounds, Indiana State School for the Deaf, Indiana University and Indiana State University.
