KC Jacobsen Staff Writer ZZZZ Z Z Page 6 March 9, 2012 Sleep is essential for a healthy life style M any teens disregard the importance of a good night's sleep; one study found that only about 15 percent of teens get the recommended 8 hours of sleep. Getting an insufficient amount of sleep can produce many consequences, depending Z Z Z on the person. Some people can function on as little as 6 hours of sleep while others may need a full 10 hours. Not getting the right amount of sleep can affect your performance in school. Students who are drowsy and tired from lack of sleep have more trouble concentrating in class and more trouble solving problems. Also, lack of sleep can make people more prone to getting acne and other skin conditions. People who do not get enough sleep can be more irritable, and harder to get along with. Establishing a healthy routine before bed time can help with sleep problems, such as reading a book or drinking a cup of warm tea. Going to bed and waking up around the same time each day and avoiding doing activities such as homework, exercise, eating, and using a computer before bed time can also help with falling asleep more easily. Red Bluff High School FFA classes attended a state field day at UC Davis with over 2500 people from all over California. The field day consisted of many different activities, new "My favorite part about field day is getting to practice welding." These prizes consisted of trophies, awards, cash prizes, and most importantly bragging rights. For the AG mechanics activity the prize is a welder's helmet. Some of the activities were creed speaking, horse judging, AG mechanics, forestry, freshman history, and BIG. BIG stands for best-informed green hand. "My favorite part about field days is getting to practice welding," said Travis Root, FFA member who attended the UC Davis field day and participated in the AG mechanics activity. At the field day, students not only got to participate in the activities, but they earned learning experiences and they also earned points that go towards their grades. Attending these field days does go towards the students grade; 20 percent of their grade. During the field day, students learn leadership skills, how to do public speaking and they also are introduced to many new people in their different activities, so they make new contacts with people all over California. "FFA benefits me by helping me learn more about AG," said Hannah Meeder, FFA student William Kaeding (12) "A Military theme. " Connect crew hoping to expand, integrating more freshmen to RBHS KC Jacobsen Staff Writer Connect Crew is a program offered through ASSETs that was formed in order to help freshmen feel more comfortable in their first year of high school and also to help them form lasting connections with older students. "Connect Crew's goal is Mrs. White (Teacher) "A Bikers and Babes theme would really rock." to bridge the gap between upperclassmen and lower class men, and to also be a support system and connect them to the high school," said Alana Hinkston, senior. Deneise Bill, ASSETs Project Facilitator said that Connect Crew would like to help upperclassmen see freshmen in a different light because, generally, freshmen are picked on and treated harshly at our school. She said that since she's been Mr. Sinclair (Teacher) "The theme would be a Sadie Hawkins so there is not as much pressure on the boys." Sound Off/KC Jacobsen a part of the Connect Crew, she has noticed a difference in the way older students have treated the freshmen, and the program would like to continue changing the way the older students view them. The way Connect Crew works, is at the beginning of the year, each member is assigned a small group of freshman that they continue seeing throughout the school year. "It's like a buddy system, and it gets freshmen involved in the school," said Emily Mota, sophomore. This year, connect crew has held many activities in order to help bring the freshmen out of their shells and continue the connections between them and their upperclassmen. During this school year, members have hosted parties, tail gate parties during football season, and fun lunch time activities. Connect Crew's goals for next school year is to expand their program. They want freshmen to become integrated into the school and develop a sense of familiarity, belonging, and comfort. Also, the program would like to see more excitement, more involvement, and more things going on next school year. Applications for Connect Crew will be available this Spring. Connect Crew also developed a side program called Frosh Fusion, which is tutoring for struggling freshman who need some extra help. Travis Root, senior, TIG welding in class. who attended the UC Davis state field day and participated in the BIG activity. This field day at UC Davis in Davis, CA was a state field day. State field days have more people attending them from all over the state. This one in particular had over 2500 people attending from all over California. "My favorite part about going to field days is getting to meet new people from all over," said Meeder. Being in the RBHS FFA classes are not only a fun group to participate in, but it also introduces you to new people in California and helps you with leadership skills and public speaking.
