The 2012 Mardi Gras Volume CXIII, Issue 11 March 9, 2012 The voice of Red Bluff High School since 1901 RED BLUFF UNION HIGH SCHOOL, RED BLUFF, CA Is It Working? Dance Contract a closer look at the Photo by Aaron Vasey A picture of the Black Light Dance last Friday night. The dance marks the one year anniversary of the dance contract coming into effect, a contract that every student must sign before attending any school dance. Marissa Chase Viewpoints Editor T he Dance Contract has been in effect since Feb. 2011, at Red Bluff High School. It is a contract that all students and their guardians must sign before attending a dance at Red Bluff High School. The cause of this contract was to reiterate the rules of dances; from the way students behaved to the way they dressed. Students, faculty members, and chaperones alike, felt that inappropriate dancing and behavior was the reason for this contract, according to Cindy Haase, the Student Government teacher and supporter and creator of the contract. There were many factors that contributed to the making of the Dance Contract. Student Government created it, using various tools like the Student Handbook. Chaperones, board members, and faculty members also took part in creating it. Kameron Kaveh, a member of Student Government, said that they wanted to clarify the rules and that is why the Student Handbook was used. The Dance Contract covers an assortment of rules and can be amended or changed if any new problems arise. According to Haase, it has before. There are consequences for not following the Dance Contract. You get a warning by having your wristband removed, and if you are caught breaking another rule, you are permanently kicked out of the dance and may not return to the next one. It has been over a year since the Dance Contract was required at this school, and many people are wondering if actual change has been made. Haase thinks that it has improved the quality of the dances. "The kids are clear on the rules and they no the consequences," she Daylight Savings Time Day Light Savings time begins this Sunday, so make sure to set your clocks one hour forward. said. Megan Didio, a sophomore, has gone to dances before and after the Dance Contract was made. She feels that not being allowed to come to the following dance if you are kicked out of the previous one, is a bit too harsh. But, she did agree that dancing before the contract was extremely inappropriate. "I think it was a good idea to remind students that there are rules," she said. Alana Hinkston, ASB President and member of Student Government, said, "There being a standard for dancing and a limit to how far you can go makes it better." Overall, Kaveh thinks it creates a better atmosphere. "A student's dancing is a reflection of themselves," he mentioned. Haase has been to every school dance over the past twelve years and notices improvements in the dancing of the students. "I think we went through a period of time where it got worse, and now the Dance Contract has made it better." Kevin Penner, a math teacher at Red Bluff High School, was an avid supporter of the Dance Contract being made to improve the behavior of students at dances. He feels that over time, things can be added to make the contract better. It just comes down to people having enough time to do things. "There are things that require constant re-evaluation and re-education and the more that you deal with them, the better the outcome," Penner said. Amendments have been made in the past, according to Haase. As a whole, she feels that it covers every detail, though. Prom will be the last dance of the school year on May 5. The rules of the Dance Contract will still apply. The Black Light Dance, last weekend, was the best dance of the school year according to Didio. Both Hinkston and Kaveh feel like it had a fun atmosphere.
