Cleveland County Health One of the main reasons people are drawn to cats as pets is the feline's self-suffi - ciency. In many respects, cats can take care of themselves and be very content with minimal pampering from their owners. Many cats do not require bathing as a dog would. They are very capable of groom- ing themselves and keeping clean. In the rare instance a cat gets very dirty or gets a substance stuck in its fur that it cannot remove, then the cat might need a bath. Few have escaped the dra- matic stories of attempting to bathe a cat, where the cat usually escapes, not before scratching or biting the per- son trying to do the bathing of the animal. Many cats are skittish around water, or any- thing like a bath is foreign to them. But there are ways to mini- mize the stress of bathing a cat -- both to the animal and the person doing the bathing. Here are a few pointers. * Brush the cat's fur before bathing to remove any tan- gles or matting. * Place something that the cat can grip with its claws into the bottom of the bath or PETS • LIVESTOCK PETS • LIVESTOCK FULL BLOODED DACHS- HUNDS 6 weeks old, shots, de- wormed, ready to go, $100 each. 704-915-0201. sink. An old piece of window screen or something similar could provide traction. Department Notice On February 8, 2012 Cleveland County Animal Control received a complaint at 127 Elam Rd, Lawndale, North Carolina in reference to a raccoon on the property displaying abnormal behavior. The Cleveland County Health Department was notified on February 10, 2012 that the raccoon tested positive for rabies. This makes the first (1st) rabies case in Cleveland County in 2012. Residents need to make sure their animals are under their direct control. Animals that are allowed to run loose are at risk of coming into contact with a rabid animal. If your animals are exposed to a rabid animal and not vaccinated, then your animals will have to be euthanized or quarantined for six months. * Fill the sink or tub up with warm water before handling the cat to minimize skittish- ness. * Place cotton in the cat's ears to prevent bath water from entering. * Slowly lower the cat into the water and watch for his or her response. Soothing words and some petting could calm nerves. * Wash the cat with a gentle shampoo designed for cats, starting at the neck and work- ing backward. Thoroughly rinse all of the shampoo, otherwise it can cause skin irritation. * Use a towel to pat the cat dry. Avoid vigorous rubbing or new matting may occur. * Place the cat in a warm room until he or she is dry. Keep the cat away from other pet cats until the bathed cat is calm and once again ready for social interaction. PETS • LIVESTOCK PETS • LIVESTOCK HAWAIIAN STYLE Blue Bully pups. During the next six months, anyone living in the vicinity of 127 Elam Rd, Lawndale, North Carolina should observe their animals for any unusual behavior. In addition, residents need to make sure that all cats, dogs and ferrets have a current rabies vaccination. North Carolina State Law requires all cats and dogs to have rabies shots at four months of age, and require a booster every three years. Anyone that sees an animal demonstrating unusual behavior needs to call the Cleveland County Animal Control Department at 481-9884.
