The Girl Scouts organization was founded by Juliette Gordon Low on March 12, 1912. The membership now embraces over 2,303,388 young ladies and over 878,904 adults. Current estimates are 3.5 million collectively. This youth organization for girls in the United States and Americans living abroad describes itself as "the world's preeminent organization dedicated soley to girls." Although nationally known for it's cookies, camping and crafts, Girl Scouts of America, in reality, is the nation's largest leadership development organization that is offered for girls. Juliette Gordon Low founded the Girl Scouts after she had met Robert Baden-Powell (the founder of the Boy Scouts) in 1911. When she returned to Savannah, Georgia she made a telephone call to a dis- tant cousin declaring,"I've got some- thing for the girls of Savannah, and all America, and all the world, and shelbyinfo.com PRESENTED BY CMS, SES AND CHS March 3rd • 9:30 AM SEE PAGE 10 FOR INFORMATION Kings Mountain Historical Museum Administrative Assistant, Norma Drewery at the Girl Scout we're going to start it tonight." The promise is often recited at Girl Scout troop meetings while holding up the three middle fingers on the right hand, which is the Girl Scout sign. The Girl Scout Law states: I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong and responsible for what I say and do, to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout. The entire Girl Scout program contin- ues to produce giving and caring young ladies and is a positive force in our society. The Kings Mountain Historical Museum deserves your support.
