It is a project of the Elois Smith was the lucky winner of the Valentine Basket at the Neal Se- nior Center Flea Market on Friday, February 10, 2012 Black History Month Americans have recognized black history annually since 1926, first as "Negro History Week: and later as "Black History Month." What you might not know is that black history had barely begun to be studied – or even documented – when the tradition was originated. Although blacks have been in America as far back as colonial times, it was not until the twentieth century that they gained a respectable presence in history books. We owe the celebration of Black History Month, and more importantly, the study of black history, to Dr. Carter G. Woodson. Born to parents who were former slaves, he spent his childhood working in Kentucky coal mines and enrolled in high school at age twenty. He graduated within two years and later earned a PH.D from Harvard. The scholar was disturbed to find in his studies that history books largely ignored the black population – and when blacks did figure into the picture, it was generally in ways that reflected the inferior social position they were assigned at the time. Woodson chose the second week of February for Negro History Week because it marks the birthdays of two men who greatly impacted the African-American population, Fredrick Douglas and Abraham Lincoln. It's time to wind down Heart Month in style at the Mardi Gras Dance, February 24, 2012 at the Council on Aging/Senior Center located at 100 T.R. Harris Drive, just off of Fallston Rd in Shelby. The 16th Celebrate Mardi Gras! Let's Dance! Avenue Band will provide the music, beginning at 7:00 pm until 10:00 pm. Mardi Gras (French for "Fat Tuesday") is the day before Ash Wednesday, and is also called "Shrove Tuesday" or "Pancake Day". It is a celebration that is held just before the beginning of the Christian liturgical season of Lent. Mardi Gras arrived in North America in the late 17th century. In 1699, the traditional Catholic celebration became North America's first Mardi Gras; in the then the French province of Louisiana. Mardi Gras costumes and masks are always welcome and encouraged at the Senior Center's Mardi Gras Dance, but are not required. The dance is open to adults, age 55 and older. Cost-$5.00 per person.
