Working Together To Make 2012 A Great Year! As we begin 2012, the economy continues to be a huge concern for us all. Even though economists predicted last year that economic recovery would take a minimum of 18 months for some semblance of stability; here in Cleveland County it seems as if it may take much longer for some sense of stability. Even though these months may continue to be long and lean, here at the Council on Aging/Neal Senior Center, we continue to be most mindful of the economy and how it has and will affect the services, programs and activi- ties that we offer for senior adults age 55 and above. As 2012 begins, the Senior Center continues to find ways to tighten our belts and budget so no program, class, service or activity will be lost or cut, if at all possible - but to do so, we need your help. You can help us by: Pre-registering or making reservations for all events or activities, which require one, so that no food or energy is wasted. Helping us cut energy costs by keeping doors to the out- side closed and turn off lights in rooms when not in use. Help us recycle copy paper and other items. Provide suggestions/ideas on other ways the Center can save. Do not adjust any thermostats – please ask staff. Donate yard sale items for the next Flea Market. (with the exception of clothes and shoes – these items can be donated to UA Thrift in the Senior Center's name and a portion of the proceeds raised is given to the Center.) Become a consignor with the "Yours and Mine" consign- ment shop. Shop in our gift shop – Cobwebs 'N Confetti – for all your gifting needs. We can help you by: Making use of our no or low cost exercise opportunities, which are available every day of the week. Enroll in one of our craft classes. Learn to dance in a no or low cost dance class. Check out a book out of our library instead of buying one. Take advantage of our no cost services, such as SHIIP (insurance counseling), income tax preparation, quarterly commodity distribution or food pantry assistance for quali- fied participants to name a few. Attend free senior relevant programs and seminars that are offered throughout the year. 2012 will be a great year, if we choose to make it one, especially if we work together!! Personal Service. He came to his profession natu- rally, since he was a descendent of a family of preachers. He felt led to speak out against social injustices just as his mentor, Mahatmas Gandi, did in India. Martin Luther King, Jr., was a common man who reminded the country of the principles and words of its founding fathers: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness." These words were not for a privileged or select few. Instead they were and are meant for all of America's children regardless of skin color. The right to live a long life, however, was not to be for this "Man of Peace." King died young as a result of his dreams for equality, but his legacy charges us all to make the world a better place in which to live, work and raise our families. Let us all remember on this national holiday honoring Dr. King, as well as throughout this new year, that hate divides whereas, love and tolerance can conquer all. The Neal Senior Center located at 100 TR Harris Drive, Shelby, NC will be open on Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and all normal activities will take place. For more informa- tion or if you have questions, please call the Senior Center at 704-482-3488. Shelby Scottish Country Dancers at the Neal Senior Center located at 100 TR Harris Drive, Shelby. Scottish Country Dancing is performed in longwise and square sets. enjoyed by groups all over the world. Scottish Country Dancing is a great way to get some exercise both physically and mentally while having a great time. This social form of dancing is not the competitive Highland Dancing you might see at a Highland Games such as the Grandfather's Mountain Highland Games. The cost is $25 per year which helps pay for use of the facility. The teacher, Eilean Yates, an accredited tutor, trained in Scotland and volunteers her time for this class. Her aim is to help others enjoy this fun pastime. If you are interested in finding out more please contact Eilean or Mike Yates at 704-482-8253 to arrange a class visit, so you can see if you'd like to join the class. The group is always looking for some new members. It is not necessary to have a partner to come and join in the fun.
