The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, April 17, 2015 2 By Jacqueline Spendlove TV Media C ountry music's "party of the year" is about to cel- ebrate its golden anni- versary. The Dallas Cowboys are lending out their home field for a very special night as the biggest names in the in- dustry come together for the 50th Academy of Country Mu- sic Awards. Don't miss the star-studded event when it airs live Sunday, April 19, on CBS, from Arlington, Texas. The music industry boasts a long list of glitzy award shows to honor the top artists of the previous year. There are even several ceremonies dedicated specifically to country music, and the ACM Awards show is one of the biggest nights of the year for artists and fans of the genre. The evening gives a nod to the cream of the crop in the industry and ushers in some rising stars who we're sure to see a lot more of in the near future. With the ceremony cele- brating its 50th anniversary, this year's broadcast is extra special, and the academy has brought back a couple of old hands and big names to keep things running smoothly. Country superstars Blake Shelton and Luke Bryan are co-hosting the event — Shel- ton for his fifth consecutive year and Bryan for his third. Shelton is himself a recipi- ent of 15 ACM Award nomina- tions, and he's taken home four, including Male Vocalist of the Year in 2012 and Song of the Year in 2013. He also has nine Country Music Asso- ciation Awards to his name and a slew of other accolades that include Grammy and Bill- board nominations and Amer- ican Country Award and CMT Music Award wins. His co-host may not be making or breaking singing hopefuls' music careers in prime time, but Bryan is cer- tainly no less celebrated. Be- sides four studio albums un- der his belt and a fifth in the works, the platinum-selling artist has earned himself al- most two dozen awards for his music and more than twice that many nominations. He took home the ACM Awards for Top New Solo Vocalist and Top New Artist in 2010, and in 2012 won every American Country Award for which he was nominated — nine in to- tal. Not surprisingly, there are some big names up for awards in the top categories this year. Leading the pack is Shelton's wife, Miranda Lam- bert, whose eight nomina- tions include Female Vocalist of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year. The Tex- as native is excited to be able to attend the awards in her home state for the first time, now that they've moved from their previous home at Las Ve- gas's MGM Grand. "I can't believe that it's in Texas, and I've got a good amount of nominations," the songstress said in "Billboard Country Update." "It'll be kind of a magical night, and I haven't been in that building when I haven't had a little bit of magic happen. You're excit- ed to be there because what- ever you're doing there is something that's pretty awe- some." Right on Lambert's heels with seven nominations is Dierks Bentley, up against both hosts for Male Vocalist of the Year, followed by Florida Georgia Line with five. All three acts are also slated to perform at the event, as are Shelton, Bryan and others, in- cluding the Queen of Country herself, Reba McEntire. The two-time Grammy winner not only has 13 ACM Awards to her name, but she's also host- ed the event a whopping 17 times. The golden anniversary show will be the first time in five years that the megastar performs on the telecast. Robynwood Home 2 x 2 coverstory Reba McEntire is set to perform at the 50th Academy of Country Music Awards The big 5-0 The Academy of Country Music Awards golden anniversary live on CBS By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: Was Cruella de Vil's car modeled after a real car or just something Disney came up with? A: The answer depends on which Cruella de Vil you're talk- ing about. If you're talking about Glenn Close's portrayal of Cruella de Vil — in the 1996 live-action film "101 Dalmatians" and its 2000 sequel — then there's an easy answer: it is a real, al- beit heavily modified, car — a Panther De Ville. For the original animated film it's a little harder. It can defi- nitely be said that her cartoon car wasn't based on the Pan- ther, as that car didn't go into production until 1974, 13 years after the film was released. Auto experts suggest that the car she drove in the animat- ed film was actually based on the much older Duesenberg car. Auto blog Jalopnik.com lists Cruella's car as one of the "10 greatest cartoon cars" and said it was based on the Duesenberg due to its "mean, classic look." The fact that it was not based on one of the many cars called a "de Ville" is a bit problematic for this theory, howev- er. In fact, her name is supposed to be a play on "devil," rath- er than reference to her car. For further proof of this, French versions of the films call her Cruella d'Enfer, which translates as "Cruella From Hell." Q: Now that the Poirot stories are finished, does that mean we won't be getting any more Agatha Christie movies? A: People have been filming the stories of crime queen Ag- atha Christie since 1928, and there's no evidence that they'll stop any time soon. You are correct in thinking that David Suchet's days as Poirot are finished — he said so himself in interviews after "Curtain: Poirot's Last Case" aired last August. However, there are other books to adapt, and other actors to play the detectives. Indeed, one of the first Christie stories we'll see is another version of the oft-adapted Poirot story "Murder on the Orient Express." It's getting the big-budget, big-screen treatment. We may get some sort of super-version of Poirot, since the script's being written by Michael Green, whose most recent film was 2011's "Green Lantern," and who previously wrote for NBC's superhero drama "Heroes."
