Wres estling begins i s s The wre reshman. s its season its new season with two girls on the team this year: Dina Menendez, senior and Homeco Nominee, fre and Katy Grissom, Volume CXIII, Issue 6 November 18, 2011 The voice of Red Bluff High School since 1901 RED BLUFF UNION HIGH SCHOOL, RED BLUFF, CA Administration coming Queen restling team has just begun considers closing the campus at lunch Photo and story by Aaron Vasey Why it should stay open O bviously, closing the campus at lunch would affect more people than just the students. One of the points discussed during last Monday's meeting in regards to the decision was that closing the campus would have a negative effect on businesses in the community, especially those who rely on the students for income. Those at the meeting also talked about some other possible consequences of forcing all students to remain on campus, such as if closing the campus would also mean more domestic issues like fights and drug related problems. Also, they took into account how the students might react should they decide to close the campus. In addition, many prerequisites must be met before the school actually closes its campus. The school must make sure that it has the resources to support the increase of students on campus by sheltering and feeding them and if they should try to improve the lunches being served on campus by the cafeteria. The point was made in the meeting that students might choose to not eat or bring their own lunches before they paid for a school lunch. According to Patrick Gleason, principal, "Right now I am open to the idea of closing campus, but I want to make sure that if that is the route we take, that as many people as possible are looked at and considered," said Principal Patrick Gleason, who led last Monday's meeting. Gleason is talking with various members of the community to get as much input as possible on the decision. Jostens Dec. 1 is the last day for students to get their cap and gown at the regular price. Jostens will be in the gym lobby during lunch for students to place their orders. Graduation gowns will not be sold again at regular price. If you have any ques- tions, talk to Melanie Burke in the main office. CSU and UC Applications CSU and UC applications are due Nov. 30. Don't wait until the last minute to sub- mit your application, get help from your school counselor and have them go over your application with you. Application help is also available after school with Mr. Hassay. Check with him for dates and times for appointments. Application portals tend to be busy as the deadlines approach so submit your application in a timely manner. T Why it should be closed here are many reasons why the administration is considering closing the campus at lunch. It has only recently been a possibility, as enrollment has been decreasing for the last few years, making it possible for the school to support the entire student body during lunch. The teachers met last Monday to discuss this issue. Each person at the meeting was asked to come up with a pro and con in regards to closing the campus. In the meeting it was agreed that closing the campus would ensure more student safety, as many students get in car accidents during lunch, although no one has ever died. Also, the Police Department is having problems with the abandoned houses surrounding the campus since students are using them for illegal activities. Along with these points, it was discussed that keeping the campus closed would also be easier to enforce than the current policy that only forces freshmen to remain on campus. Closing the campus would also keep all the money that students spend centralized on the campus (students spend about $270,000 on lunches both on and off campus each year), making it easier for the school to raise funds and would improve student-faculty relationships, as they would be spending more time together. Whether or not the administration decides to close the campus, the decision will not affect any student currently enrolled at RBHS. Next year's freshmen would be the first class to spend their entire high school careers with a closed campus. Attendance appeals Attendance appeals are due Dec. 8 by 8am. Forms are available in the main office. They must be completed by the due date to avoid losing credit. Up to eight absences can be appealed. Every year students lose credits and they must be made-up by re-taking the class.
