RBHS graduate Kalynne Schoelen (a.k.a Kalynne Michelle) has auditioned for this season's American Idol. Through her high school career, she was in show choir as a sophomore, junior, and senior, sang the national anthem at many basketball, football, and volleyball games and at Holiday Classic halftimes. She won the RBHS's talent show her junior year, and put on a benefit concert for her Senior Make a Difference Project. "I have been singing since I could talk," Schoelen says via Facebook messaging. "Singing along to the radio in the car or to my mom's CD's. But when I was eight years old I got a solo in a small Thanksgiving play at my elementary school and after the play a teacher of mine told my mom that I had some real potential and suggested I take vocal lessons. And I started taking them a few weeks later!" While she writes and performs her own songs, she sings covers of pop or country music as well, and that is the type of artist she's aiming to be. She couldn't say anything about the auditions themselves, as they haven't aired yet when interviewing, but she says, "It was a very nerve wracking yet exciting experience. I had been hoping to get this opportunity ever since I was eight years old!" Schoelen says she didn't expect to be as nervous as she was, but she was starstruck standing in front of Keith Urban, Jennifer Lopez, and Harry Connick Jr. "They are huge superstars who I respect and admire so much." she says. Talking about her mother, she says, "She's my number one fan and has supported my singing since the beginning! She's always encouraging me and reminds me that life is unpredictable and you should spend your days doing what you're meant to do!" Devan Schoelen, Kalynne's brother and current senior at RBHS, said, "I know that she will be successful in her career." Cindy Haase, a former teacher of Schoelen's, says, "I'm really excited for her. She's worked really hard, and deserves a lot of success." On the subject of who inspires her, Schoelen says, "God and my younger brother Braden, who is in Heaven, gave me strength and motivation to chase my dreams and live my life to the fullest. Going through the tragedy of losing my brother has really put into perspective how precious time is and that we must live out each day doing what we love!" Schoelen's performance is said to be aired January twenty-eighth and twenty-ninth on FOX at 8/7 central. Red Bluff High School will be hosting its third blood drive this year on, January 28 from 8:30 am - 2:00 pm, in the Library Media center. We are one of the only schools that participates in three blood drives because we have so many people here at the High School who like to participate in giving blood. Mr. Null is diligent in making sure call slips get delivered. The Key Club does help him with this endeavor though. "I think the blood drive is for a good cause," said Null, "It touches peoples lives." Liz Flaherty, who also helps host the blood drive says, " I do it because I love community service and helping others. I think its important because it gets you to know others and help out." You can sign-up in Mr. Null's classroom, 103. In order to donate blood you must be 16 or older, and a parent must fill out a form giving their consent, you also need a picture ID.
