FISHING REPORT FISHING REPOR KOSA The retirees fished Lake Wylie last week with David O'Shields and Doug Sparrow picking up the win with a catch of 12.30, they anchored that catch with a 3.10 largemouth that took big bass of the day. Mack Wyatt and Johnny Christainberry had 7.65 and were second followed by James and Fred Osborne with 5.0. This week it is back to Lake Hickory and hopefully the cooler weather will have the fish turned on. Also, a note that Lake Wylie with last week's rains came back up to a more comfortable level. Many were getting worried about being able to gain access if it had fell much more. Mother Nature helped everyone out and made it easier to put in. MOSS Only thirteen boats made it out to the weekly Thursday night bass tournament on Moss Lake last week. J.R. Garland fished solo and took top honors with 11.4, and big bass honors as well with a 4.14 largemouth. Brian and Cody Hoyle had 7.92 and were second, followed by Larry Denton and Larry Weathers with 4.14. Charles and Maverick Canipe settled in fourth with 3.02, and rounding out the top five was Arnold Ledford and Steve Gordon with 2.78. And while many pieces of equipment are expensive, even the least expensive ones are better than the stuff of years ago. Take my bow for instance. I'm shooting over 300 feet per second through an arrow rest that never touches the arrow while aiming through a fi ber optic sight that has micro adjust- ments. It is one of the best on the mar- ket and yet an entry level bow will shoot with more force and accuracy than the top bows of say the 1960's or 70's. And then when you consider things like trail camer- as, global positioning systems, and scent free clothes, there's really no reason for a hunter to not be able to harvest a deer or any other game for that matter. And what about our training? I was told the other day that there were about 400 hunting shows across America; each one trying to convey to their audience better techniques, tricks, and methods. All in all, we should never come home empty- handed. But we do. And many times the reason is because we fail to understand that resources are only tools. The internet has made everything we need easily accessible. We can listen to the greatest preachers, download the best material and books, and get advice from thousands of experts. And yet, I dare say, our ineffectiveness in drawing the world to our message is evident. And while there are some legitimate reasons for our seeming lack of success; there is also some illegitimate excuses as well – namely that we have put too much em- phasis in resources and too little empha- sis on listening for the desire of God. Fall turkey hunting, just like its spring counterpart, often begins in the dark. Head out to the woods early and set up close to a roost full of birds. As soon as they fly down, they will hit the ground and start running around like a bunch of school kids before they finally get into any kind of order. What you need to do before they get organized is act like you are one more turkey looking for its flock by imitating the calls you hear, which could include sleepy clucks, yelps, angry cackles, kee kee whistles, and even jake gobbles.
