The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, September 30, 2011 2 coverstory Problems at Plainsboro Doctors pay for indiscretions in Season 8 By Christina Davies TV Media T elevision's favorite crotchety diagnostician has pulled some unbe- lievable stunts in the past seven seasons, but viewers are about to find out if the one that capped off last sea- son will be the last straw. Fans of Fox's "House" will remember the shocking end of Season 7 when, after a few episodes chronicling the Gregory House's downward spiral following his breakup with Lisa Cuddy (played by Lisa Edelstein), he attempted to take out some of his anger by driving his car through her dining room window. This set the stage for a whole new batch of problems House must face in Season 8, pre- miering Monday, Oct. 3 on Fox. This award-winning series stars Brit-with-an-uncanny- American-accent Hugh Laurie as the title character, with Robert Sean Leonard, Olivia Wilde, Peter Jacobson and Omar Epps star as his diag- nostic team. "House" has provided viewers with char- acters that we hate to love and love to hate. The season opener takes place 12 months after the events of Season 7's violent ending, with House incarcer- ated. Viewers can perhaps ex- pect a parallel between this may never get the chance to play out the potentially awk- ward situations this might bring up — what with her be- ing his immediate supervisor and longtime friend — since Lisa Edelstein announced over the summer that she will not be returning to the set this fall. "After much consider- Olivia Wilde stars in "House" and Season 6 premiere that opened on House committed in a psychiatric institution. Entertainment-industry ru- mor has it that Jaleel White is slated to make a guest ap- pearance in this season's first episode as House's new cell- mate. White, of course, is best known for his portrayal of Steve Urkel on the '90s ABC sitcom "Family Matters," but since then he's filled out his resume with a considerable number of other television roles — acting and directing — as well as appearing in a handful of feature films. His most recent small-screen role has him "starring" as Cee-Lo Green in Green's new music video for the song "Cry Baby." As the curtain fell on Sea- son 7's last episode, we hear Cuddy tell officers after the reckless driving incident that she wants to obtain a re- straining order against House. It seems the show's writers ation," Edelstein said, "I am moving onward with a com- bination of disappointment at leaving behind a character I have loved playing for seven years and excitement of the new opportunities in acting and producing that lie ahead." The buzz is that Edelstein has signed on to appear in a few upcoming episodes of the CBS drama "The Good Wife," but beyond that, there is no indication of what she may be up to in the future. Her departure came as a shock to viewers, but, more importantly, to the writers and cast members as well. "[It] came out of left field in my world, too," Laurie told website Zap2it. "I don't know who was privy to what at what time, but it was a great shock to me and everyone ob- viously misses her very great- ly. Not only was she a great asset to the show as a per- former, but we also just miss her company, because she is an absolute hoot to have around." There has been much spec- ulation as to whether or not the eighth will be the show's A/Auto Boutique B/The Green Giraffe 2 x 2 last season, but Edelstein's departure has only added fuel to that roaring rumor. Also helping to move that bit of gossip along, though, is Lau- rie's musical endeavors. He just released a blues album in September and an accompa- nying PBS special is slated to air this week. While there appears to be no animosity toward Edel- stein, it is almost guaranteed the same cannot be said for Peter Jacobson's character Dr. Chris Taub this upcoming sea- son. Toward the end of Sea- son 7, Taub discovered that the nurse he'd been sleeping with, while he was simultane- ously trying to reconcile with his wife, was pregnant. As he was about to tell his wife he was leaving their marriage for good to help raise his child on the way, she stuns him with the news that she is also car- rying his baby. Taub has got some 'splaining to do! There has been no word yet on the events to come for Dr. Remy Hadley, a.k.a. Thirteen, played by Wilde, but odds in- dicate that her recent past will continue to haunt her. When we left her, she was dealing with the consequenc- es of the time she spent in jail after euthanizing her brother who suffered from Hunting- ton's disease. Thirteen herself had her worst fears confirmed at the end of Season 4 when she learned that she had also inherited the disease from her mother. Chirstopher's Coins 2 x 2 hollywoodQ&A By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: I saw "X-Men: First Class" (2011) and it showed how a young Charles Xavier ends up being in a wheel- chair. Last night, I was watching "X-Men: The Last Stand" (2006) and at the beginning of the movie an older Charles Xavier walks over to meet Jean Grey for the first time. Whatever happened to continuity? A: A lot of serious "X-Men" fans (and there are a lot of them) will tell you that continuity went out the window with "X-Men: First Class." You're right that the explanation in "First Class" of Pro- fessor Xavier's paralysis doesn't fit the timeline set up in the previous films, but it wasn't just "The Last Stand." Xavier was also seen walking in the 2009 film "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." Both of those films are said to have taken place years after "First Class." "First Class" also causes continuity trouble with the first film, released in 2000. In that one, Xavier talks about Jean Grey, Cyclops and Storm being "among my first students," however they were not among the mutants who made up the titular "first class" of the new film's title. Of course, comics and their subsequent movies are noto- riously slippery to pin down on these things, and they often claim such things as alternate dimensions and time-travel- ing to get out of continuity problems.
