It was in November 2010 that Justin, a member of Troop 112 in Lawndale, decided to build a memorial garden there in honor of cancer victim, Carey Heavner. His brother, Matt, was in Carey's class and his mother, Valerie is both a teacher's assistant and a school bus driver at Fallston. It was not until the fi rst of July that Justin actually started his project. He drew up the plans and submitted his pro- posal. Each corner of the ten-foot square garden has a bench. There is a handicap accessible entrance and the focal point is a fountain that is already collecting coins. A bulldog, Fallston Elementary's mascot sits on the right side of the entrance. The Carey Heavner Foundation will place a statue of a little girl praying within the garden and a plaque boldly proclaiming "The Carey Heavner Memorial Garden" will also be added. Generous donations helped Justin complete his project. He envisions other cancer victims' names in brick to be added, embracing the memorial. "I feel relieved that it is fi nally done and I am very proud of it", he said. Justin Lattimore is the recipient of many awards including The Boy Scouts Honor Society, The Arrow of Light and the Religious Knot. Across his chest, he proudly displays 45 earned merit badges. –M.
