Page 4 October 3, 2014 Arts and Entertainment Scene Night is really enjoyable and put on its best show ever! Scene Night entertains flawlessly Devan Schoelen and Jodie Capps performing a skit during Scene Night on Tuesday the 23rd of September. Picture by Hailie Willey An intriguing factor about how the story plays out is that you don't find out that Emily Ruff's plot line is actually playing out about 10 years behind Wills until very late in the book, which makes the surprising ending very hard to predict. This book is riveting and original, with a concept that is new and like nothing I have ever read before, and I've read a lot. Not only is the story extremely thought out, the characters are exquisitely developed and the f lash-back narrative style isn't tiring and confusing like with other books I've read of the same style. Overall, this novel is a dark, gripping narrative that will draw you in and not let you go until the last page, keeping you riveted with raw dialogue, detailed violence and intricate sub plots and political scandals. If you're looking for a deep, stimulating plot with complex characters and gruesome details, this story is the only way to go. With the perfect blend of science fiction surrealism and hard, cold, reality, Max Barry's Lexicon is definitely my favorite book. A great mix of comedy and adventure! Juanita VanMeter Staff Writer Words hold immense power. More power than you would ever think, and the words you say, the things you text to your friends, the secrets you reveal in "private" Facebook surveys, it's all being used to control you. In Max Barry's Lexicon, words hold the key to total compromise- a state of complete control, during which the person you have compromised will do anything and everything you have told them to any extent, even brute violence and murder. The story follows Will, a man who was kidnapped from an airport and taken hostage by two strange men, and forced to travel with them to an undisclosed location to fix a complicated problem for them. All the while they seem convinced that he is not who he says he is and that "Will" is a facade to protect himself, and that he is hiding his true identity. While we follow Will's gruesome and terrifyingly confusing ordeal, the chapters also jump to the story of a 16 year old homeless girl, Emily Ruff, as she uses her powers of persuasion to cheat people at card games for cash on the streets of New York City. She gets picked up by a prestigious school in outer Manhattan and offered high pay and a free education in the arts of linguistics, and naturally she accepts. Bluffer Fun Facts • One-Eyed Willy's skull was made from real bone. • All the jewels that Mama Fratelli (Anne Ramsey) pulled out of Mouth's (Corey Feldman) mouth, were all really in his mouth. • There were so many rewrites that the actors didn't even get their scripts until it was time to shoot. • Chunk (Jeff Cohen) got the chicken pox a few days before filming. • The Goonies are Broadway-bound. 'The Goonies' Savannah Sutliff Topics Editor (1985) Bluffer Staff Pick levels become very challenging later on. You get stars for every level and achievements thought the game. Also, Two Dots has a sound track. The music is kind of corny, but it matches the app really well. It has a cute tune and has a happy tone. The app allows you to connect with friends on Facebook and share what you do in the game. Two Dots doe remind me of another app. It is almost like Flow. Flow was the game where you connect the dots, but that is all there is. Two Dots has the connecting thing going for them, but the makers added their own unique style and flare. If you liked Flow when that game became a huge deal, then you will love Two Dots. I love this game because I am a puzzle fanatic. It is super cute and fun. However, it isn't addicting which is really nice and refreshing since all the apps lately have been soul sucking apps. Undoubtedly worth the down- load! The Two Dot app is supposed to be the new biggest thing. I listen to Pandora all the time and the Two Dot app add kept showing up! I was eventually worn down and just downloaded the app. I thought I might as well try it. The only down side I could think of was being addicted to a stupid annoying game. So, turns out I actually really love it! And it isn't in that weird addictive hype type of love. The main goal of this game is to connect the dots and get rid of them. When you first start playing, there are these really cute cartoon people who seem like adventurers and a cartoon background of a house setting. Then you click on the level you want to play and it takes you to the panel of dots. As you progress in the game, your background/wall gets filled up with fun gadgets and your achievements. The farther you go, the more you get. Eventually the levels change. For instance, you start off in just this house with easy levels and then you keep winning so the level changes to a deep sea level. When the area changes, the elements in your game change. In the deep sea level you have to sink the anchors along with getting rid of the dots. The Ceighlee Fennel Features Editor 'Two Dot' lives up On September 23 at 6 PM, the Red Bluff High School drama class starred in an event called Scene Night in the PAC. The performers had the dangerous task to create and prepare for the mighty performances in less than a month. There were ten different skits performed with the approximate amount of twenty performers. "Scene Night was definitely more fun than staying home and playing video games because you know, video games rot your brain cells," stated Junior Sarah Bartlett. The production was performed by Drama 2 students with an exception of a few students from Drama 1. There were skits ranging from politics to angry couples to "The Testosterone Bulldozer." "We needed more time to prepare," senior Devan Schoelen said. It was my first time going to Scene Night, and I felt like it was one of the best performances I have ever been to. It seemed like the performers put a lot of time and effort into it. "I am proud of the students for putting on an excellent show," said Mr. Homme, drama teacher. My favorite skit was "Flight Boarding" which was about the joys of boarding a flight at a busy airport. The main actor, played by David Woods, grew annoyed by how many people were able to board the plane, even though he was in first class. During this skit, I was gasping for air because I laughed so hard. Though it was a long skit, the performers kept the audience laughing. Another skit that I highly enjoyed was "The Testosterone Bulldozer" performed by Evan Meagher and Dane Landingham. The funniest part was the sight of Dane Landingham wearing pajamas with American flag print. The skit was a promotion for HR Johnson's comprehensive self-defense program. "The Testosterone Bulldozer" is a technique born of patriotism and masculinity. I thought that the performances at Scene Night were extremely funny and amusing to any age. The performers seemed to have learned to act in a style that any age would find enjoyable. 'The Goonies' 'Lexicon' dazzles with great narrative Hailie Willey Staff Writer The Goonies released in 1985 is a comedic adventure movie that was directed by Richard Donner written by Chris Columbus and from a story by executive producer Spielberg. This movie is a classic 80's movie with the delightful twist of a treasure hunt that audiences love because of all the adventure along with plenty of comedic relief. The movie follows a group of friends "Mikey" (Sean Astin), "Mouth" (Corey Feldman), "Data" (Ke Huy Quan), "Brand"(Josh Brolin), "Chunk" (Jeff Cohen), "Andy" (Kerri Green), and "Stef" (Martha Plimpton). The friends all live in a coastal town that is being taken over by a country club that is forcing everyone out of their homes and without any money none of them have any way to fight for their homes. While spending one of their last days together at Mikey's house the friends that like to call themselves the "Goonies" find a treasure map in Mikey's attic and decide to spend their last moments together going on adventure. On this adventure the group ends up running from criminals, exploring underground caves, and find pirate ship along with many other exciting antics that keep everyone glued to the screen. This movie is great money for adventure, thriller, comedy and chill movie lovers alike it is the perfect movie for a rainy day or anytime that you want to watch a cult classic. It is also a beloved and widely referenced film that goes on the list of must see movies into anyone that calls themselves a true movie. This movie was one of the first to mix the adventure and comedy genres and paved the way for so many of the movies we know and love today. So if you want to see the original of a genre that will make you laugh and excite you watch Goonies. A great novel with gripping narrative!
