In the first half of that cen- tury, the club promoted the fledgling aviation industry with the support of such notable aviators as Amelia Earhart, James “Jimmy” Dolittle, and Orville Wright. After World War II, the club focused on programs supporting stronger families and Americanism. In 1979, child abuse prevention was adopted as the national program. The club also sponsors programs sup- porting community service and youth scholarships. Exchange was one of the first service clubs to open its mem- bership to women. There are currently more than 700 clubs and over 28,000 members. Exchange Club members volun- teer their time and money to make their communities better places to live. Members work together following the club motto “Unity for Service.” Alexander thanked the club for its donation of care package items to his recent trip to Nicaragua. He also praised its con- tinuing commitment to making Shelby and Cleveland County a better place to live. He presented Raines with a mayor’s resolution recognizing the club’s service to the community. Summerfield thanked the club for its impressive level of service to the local community and to the Exchange Club organization. He pointed out numerous Shelby members who have held regional and district positions since the Shelby club’s founding in July 1972. The evening included dinner and a 100th anniversary cake. The first piece of cake was served to the first Shelby Club President, Dave Hinson. Raines recognized the Shelby Club charter members in attendance and pointed out that 6 of the charter members are still active in the club. In attendance were club members Gene Webber, Robert Ledbetter, Bob Jenkins, Sara Jenkins, Cleatus Hunsinger, Bobby Raines, Janice Raines, Bobby Malloy, Margaret Malloy, Miller Bowman, Michael Hamrick, Paul Jolley, Maxine Jolley, Steve Costner, Brenda Costner, Bert Costner, Betty Kendrick, Lib Grayson, Ted Grayson, Buford Ellis, Krystal Spurling, Jimmy Baynard, and Bob Smith. Guests, most of which were past club members, included Dave Hinson, Christine Hinson, Jim Boggs, Joe Roberts, Gilbert Greene, Myles Whitaker, Keith Hawkins, Steven Allen, John Reavis, Tommy Hawkins, Nancy Ellis, Katherine Brooks, and Mike Gammons. The Exchange Club of Shelby is a civic club serving all of Cleveland County. The club is well known for its primary fund- raiser, selling peanuts at the Cleveland County Fair, and for its annual youth scholarship program that recognizes 2 graduat- ing seniors from each high school. The Shelby Club has received local and national awards, including the Distinguished Service Award from North Shelby School, the 2010-2011 National Exchange Service Award, Exchange Fundraising Award, Exchange Service to Seniors Award, Exchange Americanism Award, and the 100th Birthday Club N.C. District Challenge Award. The Club has also spon- sored Cleveland County students that have received the North Carolina District Exchange Youth of the Year Scholarship and the North Carolina District A.C.E. Award.
