Garland fished solo and picked up the win with 6.85. David O’Shields also was solo and was second with 4.45 and rounding out the top three was Fred Wright and Ken Johnson with 4.0. Wright and Johnson had big bass of the day with a 2.45 largemouth. After the week off, they will be on Lake Hickory this week. Moss Two weeks ago there were 19 boats at the weekly Thursday night bass tournament on Moss Lake. Nathan White and Scott Yarbro had 3.76 and that was enough for the win. Brian and Cody Hoyle were second with 3.29 followed by Allen Pickleshimer and Bill Beattie with 2.65. Tommy Chapman and Reggie Guffey had 2.50 and were fourth, and they also had big fish with that 2.50 largemouth. Last week 18 boats fished and Reggie and Johnny Guffey took the win with 5.92. Randy and Randall Wright had 4.86 and took second. Ever so close in third was Walt Brysick and Shane Briggs with 4.85 while Leebo and Dillon Smith settled in fourth with 3.39. Phillip Buckham and Andy Briggs had 1.67 and were fifth. Big bass was a 2.32 lar- gemouth and was brought in by the team of Reggie and Johnny Guffey. THE FISHIN THE FISHING SP DER SPIDER I am sure you are but there is someone that hangs around shore- line weeds, boat docks and fishing piers all across the United States and very few fishermen or non- fishermen even know about them or realize they are even there. This someone is a long-legged, buoyant spider rightly named the fishing spider. It is capable of skating across water surfaces and may submerge, for as long as 45 minutes, by grasping underwater vegetation, where it awaits minnows or tadpoles. When it catches on, the fishing spider does not release it, ever and will consume the minnow in a matter of hours. The fishing spider will also cling to the bottom of a dock or a bridge piling and drop onto a fish, biting it with venomous fangs. If the minnow is large, he will hang on, hitching a ride until the poison does its job. Isn’t nature amazing? Speaking of that, did you know the familiar striped skunk is a pretty good shot in the woods? Its spray of musk can hit a target as far as 12 feet away and even farther if the wind is in its favor. Contact Greg Huntley at 828-286-2614 or 828-447-7850 EOE By Gary Miller By The long, hot, summer days are trying for those who love the outdoors. Fishing can only be tolerated very early or very late, and hunting is not even in the pic- ture. These times of drought make us edgy and uneasy while we are waiting for better times. Sometimes, it seems that we live in a pace of extremes. The action is either fast and furious, or slow and non-exis- tent. There are no days that the hunting and fi shing is so good that we go at it in a leisurely pace. No, there is no dimmer switch on our activities. We are either on or off. My friend refuses to eat while he’s bass fi shing. Time spent reaching for some nabs, could be time spent casting one more time. He literally will complain about being hungry when he’s only a few feet away from food. He’s got the bass bug, bad. On the other hand, I cannot ask the fi sh to take the “food” I’m offering them if I’m not willing to show them the way. So, I prefer to fi sh on a full stomach. Most of us have addictive personali- ties. It’s all or nothing. Words like mod- eration and patience are not in our vo- cabulary. And starting with something of lesser value and working our way up ...get out & enjoy nature! Thursday, July 14-July 20, 2011 Outdoor Connection FISHING REPORT FISHING REPOR Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ oward Christ to something nicer is a virtue of those only from a previ- ous generation. Golf for instance, is a perfect example. I used to play golf until I realized why they called it golf. It’s be- cause all of the other four letter words were taken. You can’t play golf without custom clubs, two-tone shoes, and polyester pants. In fact, just try to tee off on a golf course with your “Will hunt for food” T-shirt and you’ll see what I mean. You’ll be hunting for a new place to play golf because that T-shirt better have a collar. Heck, I thought that’s why they were called “T-shirts”…… so I could tee off in one. Wrong! Yeah, I don’t know about them golf- ers. I’m a hunter and fi sherman. I don’t have to have all of that stuff. Those guns, muzzleloaders, bows, knives, camoufl age clothes, tree stands, boots, trucks, boats, fi shing rods, tackle and licenses, are tools I need to bring food home to my family. There’s no addiction here, just honest concern for the well- being of those that I love. The Lord wouldn’t want it any other way. www outdoortruths.or AUTOS • TRUCKS AUTOS • TRUCKS 1981 CHEVROLET UTILITY TRUCK, 6 cylinder, granny 4 speed, new transmission, $1500. 828-429-4566. 2007 MERCEDES C230, 41k miles, some hail damage, black on black, excellent condition, $17,500. 704-473-1176 ask for Joe. 1995 CHEVROLET ASTRO Conversion Van.
