The Evening Group meets the 2nd Monday of every month from 6:30pm - 8:00pm at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer (502 W. Sumter Street, Shelby, NC). The Daytime Group meets the last Tuesday of every month from 11:30am - 1:30pm at the Cleveland Memorial Library (104 Howie Drive, Shelby, NC). Sponsored by the Mental Health Association in Cleveland County. This group is not intended for those who have personally survived a suicide attempt. What does a Park Ranger do on a day to day basis? Meet in the Visitor Center auditorium at 2:00 pm. Saturday, August 16: "Masked Bandits". Fact or Fiction: Do raccoons wash their food? Find out the answer to this and much more about those furry little "masked bandits" at South Mountains State Park. Meet Ranger Amanda at the Visitor Center at 11:00am to learn a few myths and legends as well as fun facts about raccoons. All ages welcome. Saturday, August 16: "Animals of the South Mountains". Join a Park Ranger to learn about the many animals that call South Mountains home. The program will begin at 2:00pm in the Visitor Center auditorium. Sunday, August 17 & 24: "Knot Tying 101". Knot tying is a fundamental skill for many tasks. Whether you are a beginning climber, backpacker or just want to learn a few knots. Join a Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00pm. Saturday, August 23: "The 10 Essentials". What items should you always carry with you when hiking? Meet a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 11:00 pm to learn about the "10 Essentials". Saturday, August 23: "Black Bears: Majestic Creatures of the Wild". How dangerous are black bears? Can we coexist? Why are black bears so unique? What should I do if I see a black bear? The program will begin at 2:00pm in the Visitor Center. Saturday, August 30: "Streamside Hike". Join a Park Ranger at the Jacob Fork Parking Area at 11:00am for a streamside hike along the Jacob Fork River. Saturday, August 30: "The 10 Essentials". What items should you always carry with you when hiking? Meet a Park Ranger at the Visitor Center at 2:00pm to learn about the "10 Essentials". Sunday, August 31: "The Amazing World of Spiders". Silk stronger than steel? Join Ranger Waltz at the Visitor Center at 2:00 pm for an informative presentation on spiders. Participants will have the opportunity to catch and examine spiders that are alive. South Mountains State Park is located south of Morganton off of old Highway 18. South Mountain Baptist Association Fun Day The South Mountain Baptist Association, 3639 NC Hwy 18 Vale, NC, will be having a Free Family Fun Day August 16, 4:00-8:00pm. Everything will be free! We will give out 300 school supply bags rang- ing from kindergarten through high school at 5:30. We will also have a hot dog meal, infl atables, games, face painting, gospel music, pop corn, sno-cones, a clown will be giving out balloons, and will even be giving free hair cuts. Cleveland County Post-Polio Support Group The Cleveland County Post-Polio Support Group will hold their August meeting at the conference room of the Life Enrichment Center of Shelby on Monday, August 18, 6:00pm. The conference room is located at the back of the building. The center is located off Hwy 18 North on Life Enrichment Blvd, just north of Cornerstone Dentistry. Each person attending should bring his/her own meal. Drinks: coffee and water will be provided. The program will be presented by David Thompson, a polio survivor. He will share his story of life with polio. (David was scheduled for July but postponed his program until August.) If you are a polio survivor please plan to attend. This grief sharing group meets for six weeks. No cost and open to anyone who has lost a loved one.
