Only 2 from the state of South Carolina and 2 from North Carolina are in the field. The two from North Carolina, just happen to be from Shelby, Matt Arey and Bryan Thrift. Tennessee leads all states with 8 anglers casting for this Championship. Daily blast-offs will be at 7am with weigh-ins at 5 on Thursday and Friday,3:30 on Saturday and 3:00 on Sunday. You can watch the weigh -ins live on flwoutdoors.com. Join me in wishing both the Shelby anglers the best of luck. Kosa The retirees fished Lake Wylie last week with J R Garland and Rick Miers getting the win with a catch of 7.2. Dean Champion and Fred Wright claimed second with 5.9 and that was all that caught a legal 14 inch fish. Big fish was a tie between the same two teams, as both had a 2.6 largemouth. This week the old-timers will be on Lake Norman. Moss Two weeks ago, only 14 boats fished the weekly Thursday night bass tournament on Moss Lake. Matt Jones and Jason Hinson got the win with 7.46. Bryan Thrift and Matt Arey took second with 5.06. Russell Kiser and Jacob Hughes settled in third with 3.56. Big bass of the evening was a 3.0 largemouth brought in by Jones and Hinson. This past Thursday, 23 boats fished as J R Garland and Ronnie Beason picked up the win with a catch of 11.45. Matt Arey and Bryan Thrift had 11.37 to take second and third went to Buddy and Lindsey Black with 11.15. Arnold Ledford and Tim Sisk tied with Jody Black and Jason Rhodes for fourth with 7.40. Big bass was a 5.20 brought in by Black and Rhodes. I ask again this week for continued thoughts and prayers for one of my fishing buddies, Randy Scarborough, as he continues to recover from a motorcycle accident. If anyone has any suggestions on stories or pictures of their catch or kill, you can e-mail me at brucencracefancamp@ gmail.com. There has always been something special about getting a new knife. I see that same satisfac- tion in my son. He owns several and is never unhappy when he receives another. It's almost a rite of passage when a young man gets his fi rst. Some weaker types cringe at the thought of their son having a knife. I cringe at the thought of them cringing over such a common and natural thing. I have several warm memories of my youth experiences with knives. One of them involved Tom. Tom was a man in his upper seventies and I was only a teenager. Tom was wise and crafty. I was dumb and naive. Tom had more knives than I could ever imagine. Some of them use to be mine until he traded me out of them. At that time, I thought that I had made the smarter trade. Today I know different. Tom couldn't read or write but had more common sense and wisdom than most of the people I knew. He was also a very spiritual man. His ministry involved making sure that each home had been dedicated to the Lord. If it hadn't, he would gather a small congregation and meet at the willing participant's house on a Saturday night. There, someone would give a biblical lesson or preach a sermon, a song would be sung, and Tom would offer a prayer of dedica- tion. Some in my home area are still living in a house that has been dedicated to the Lord by Tom. There were several times that I was the one called on to speak. I learned so much from him. I laugh now when I think about how he would "horse trade" with me. But he was doing so much more than "horse trading." He was growing up a young man. He was teaching me the cunning ways of the world and the caring ways of the Lord and he was not doing it with something that might have caused me to run away. But he was doing it with something that caused me to want to be around him and something that we both loved; a knife. By By Gary Miller Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ GARY MILLER gary@outdoortruths.org ~ www.outdoortruths.org Fish the Shade for Hot Action Shade is a great place for catching bass on hot August days. When it gets hot, bass are no different than us. They're going to look for the coolest spot they can find. Sometimes that's in deeper water or where spring-fed streams run into the lake, but it can also be in the shade cast by bridges, rock bluffs, trees, or boat docks. Look for shaded areas, and then cast to them three or four times before moving on. You can cover a lot of water by doing this, plus your strikes-per-cast ratio will be better. You can fish in the sun six inches out of a shadow and not take a hit. But sometimes, the moment you drop a lure into the middle of that same shade, a bass will attack it.
