Many times the pain is reccurrent but because it occurs over a period of years, it is left untreated. Proper evaluation of the patient should involve an examination that includes several things. After initially ruling out fracture or serious pathology, examination can reveal a lack of range of motion of fixated spinal segments, associated muscle spasm of the injured area, swelling which indicates damage, among other signs. The examination may reveal a minor problem in joint motion of the spine or a more serious injury causing severe restriction of motion and pain. The problem can even cause radiation to the buttocks or lower extremities. Other types of injuries to the low back can cause the shock absorbers of the spine, called the discs, to lose their shape and ability to function. This damage is commonly called a disc bulge although there are several types of different severity. Over time, the body and brain learns to adapt to the pain and the pain disappears or becomes managable. Unfortunately, there has been no repair to the injury and the area is now weaker. Often the patient reinjures the area several times over many years before it becomes bad enough to seek proper treatment. If corrected early enough, the condition will not progress and the patient need not suffer for many years. There is no age that low back pain affects most, nor is it gender specific. Commonly, the older the patient the more severe the damage and the poorer the prognosis than a patient who is younger and more recently injured. It is not uncommon for patients to be injured as a young child. Many children fall regularly as they learn to coordinate their bodies and walk or play. Constant trauma to the spine can lead to damage of the spine that takes years to progress as a pain they can identify. It is importmant that any child experiencing a fall be evaluated properly to prevent future problems. Low back pain can also affect patients who have already sought surgery or injections as a form of treatment and are surprised that they can still receive help. Health care is moving towards early detection and treatment of this condition, whereas prior treatment used to involve leaving the problem until it needed drastic care.
