The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, June 17, 2011 10 A/ Olsego Manor B/Warm Solutions 2 x 2.5 Season 1 “Masterchef” Whitney Miller (second from right), along with judges Graham Elliot, Gordon Ramsay and Joe Bastianich Cook like a ‘Masterchef’ Season 1 winner rolls out new cookbook TV Media etting your natural tal- ent recognized by the top names in the culi- nary world is a dream come true for many self-proclaimed “foodies.” G And some of America’s best untrained chefs are aim- ing to achieve just that on the second season of “Mas- terchef,” airing Mondays and Tuesdays on Fox. Since its June 6 premiere, the reality- competition series has al- ready whittled the field down from 100 hopefuls to just can- didates, and the competition promises to heat up further throughout the show’s sum- mer run. The judges -- Fox fixture Gordon Ramsay, restaurateur Joe Bastianich and four-star chef Graham Elliot -- are look- ing for that one candidate who possesses the unique combination of skill, creativity and a true passion for food. It’s not a tall order to fill, since they found it last season in Poplarville, Miss., native Whit- ney Miller. At the time, the 22-year-old University of Southern Missis- sippi student edged out fellow finalist David Miller (no rela- tion) to win the $250,000 grand prize along with a cook- book publishing deal. Yet in one of the most talked-about moments from the finale, things could have easily fallen apart for Miller: her chicken fell on the floor just as she fin- ished cooking it. With only seven minutes left, the quick- thinking Miller managed to quickly fire up another piece and still present her butter- milk-chicken-with-creamed- collard-greens entree as part of her winning meal. It’s been nearly a year since that life-changing moment, and now Miller’s cookbook -- titled “Modern Hospitality: Simple Recipes With Southern Charm” -- is set to hit stores on July 5. To her fans and fol- lowers, the 75 recipes fea- tured are pure Whitney: a fresh take on classic Southern cuisine that’s heavy on local flavors but perfect for easy entertaining. And although she may have been referred to as the “Pastry Princess,” the recipes are actually a mix of the sweet and savory, such as Mississippi cheesesteak and sweet potato peanut but- ter blondies. They’re the kind of dishes that piqued the judges’ interest throughout the “Masterchef” competi- tion. It’s been quite a busy year for Miller, who credits her family and her faith with keeping her both grounded and inspired. She’s completed her studies in nutrition and continues to run a cafe (which she co-owns with her mother) in her hometown. With one cookbook already under her belt, she continues to put her creativity to work in the kitch- en by creating new recipes, some of which can be viewed on her blog at whitneymiller- mc.blogspot.com. With so much on the go, it’s clear the “Masterchef” judg- es weren’t wrong in recogniz- ing Miller’s passion for food and her determination. She summed it up best during the finale: “If you have a dream, go after it.” Touch of class 3 x 2 Cooking this week SATURDAY 12:30 p.m. (48) Dessert First Anne makes her delicious and precious mini deep-dish cherry pies. 1:00 p.m. (12) America’s Test Kitchen From Cook’s Illustrated Recipes include charcoal-grilled stuffed chicken breasts and grilled tuna steaks. 1:30 p.m. (12) P.
