C-4 Wednesday, June 11, 2014 The Press-Dispatch H church news Continued from page 1 PAWS pet of the week "It's impossible to keep a straight face in the presence of one or more puppies"—Unknown. This week PAWS is featuring five fun loving pups named Flynn, T-bone, Striker, Kinzer, and Samuel. These boys were found abandoned and full of ticks and parasites. They have since been treated and are now feeling like pups should. In fact, they had been playing so hard before their photo shoot that several of them fell asleep in front of the camera. Three of the boys have soft golden fur, two with a bit of black on their face and the oth- er two appear to be marked like Rott- weilers. They all have pleasing person- alities and love to tug at shoestrings. You must see these little fur balls to choose your favorite. To adopt Flynn, T-bone, Striker, Kinzer, or Samuel, call 354-9894. "'Do not fear any of those things which you are about to suffer. Indeed, the dev- il is about to throw some of you into prison, that you may be tested, and you will have tribulation ten days. Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.'" It's very interesting to me how this is worded. He said, "The devil is about to throw some of you into prison." Paul makes this statement in Ephesians 6:10 -13: "Final- ly, my brethren, be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principali- ties, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand." annual Soup & Salad luncheon Thursday, June 19 Serving from 11 AM until 1 PM First united Methodist church 9th and Walnut Streets in Petersburg Your $5.00 donation benefits the United Methodist Women's Missions Programs RIVER OF LIFE FELLOwSHIP 342 E. "The gospel . . . of which I, Paul, have become a ser- vant" (Colossians 1:23 NIV ). Who am I? What's my calling? The apostle Paul, who considered himself "not in the least inferior to the most eminent apostles" (II Corinthians 11:5 NAS), answers simply: "I am Paul. My role is serving. I am a servant to the gospel and the body of Christ." Whatever your calling, be it pastor of a mega church or a lay member, you're no more and no less than a ser- vant. In God's kingdom class distinctions don't count . . . We're servants called to do the will of God wherev- er He appoints us to serve. And that's a good thing . . . We should be concerned about what pleases God, not people. He alone can evalu- ate our service. . . Taken in part from The Word For You Today. See you in church next Sunday. He found his five-year- old son waiting for him at the door. "Daddy, may I ask you a question? " The dad replied: "Yeah, sure, what is it? " "Daddy, how much mon- ey do you make an hour? " The dad got mad. "Why do you want to know? " "I just want to know." The dad, just wanting to sit down and re- lax, said, "If you must know, I make $20 an hour." The little boy sighed and bowed his head. Looking up, he asked, "Daddy, may I bor- row $10? " The father flew off the handle, "If the only reason you wanted to know how much money I make is so that you can hit me up for some cash to buy a toy, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. I work long, hard hours ev- ery day and don't have time for this." The dad sat down and af- ter an hour or so, the man had calmed down, and start- ed to think that maybe he was a bit hard on his boy. Maybe his son really needed the money for something im- portant. And so, the father went up to his boy's room. "I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earli- er. It's been a long day, and I took it out on you. Here's that 10 bucks you asked for." The little boy sat straight up, beaming. "Oh, thank you, Daddy," he exclaimed. Then, reaching under his pillow, he pulled out a wad of crumpled up bills. The little boy slowly counted out his money, and then looked up at his dad and said, "I didn't have enough, but now I do. We at House of Mercy have that ear. Many times study and preparation is made for the message, but thanks be to God, the messenger may be the same, but the Spirit will sometimes change his message. Bob Deel will bring the evening message as our pastor will be visiting with his father and family. know god's will "Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it (Psalm 127:1)." If there ever was a day when you and I must know God's will and purpose for our lives, it's now. In fact, nothing else is go- ing to work! God is changing and rearranging things, lin- ing them up for the end-time move of the Spirit. If you're going to keep up, you must know God's perfect plan for your life—and how to car- ry it out in His power! How do you do that? Through prayer. God has provided us a prayer in His Word that we can use to receive the wis- dom and understanding we need for this critical time we live in. You'll find it in Colos- sians 1:9 -11: "For this cause . . . we do not cease to pray for you, and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of {God's} will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding; that ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God; strength- ened with all might, accord- ing to his glorious power, un- to all patience and long suf- fering with joyfulness." Instead of letting the Lord build the house, we try to build it ourselves and end up doing it all in vain. Pray the above prayer, put it to work in your life daily and God will fill you with His knowledge and under- standing! You are welcome to wor- ship with us in any of our services. Alec Hensley, Pastor Eleanor Bellamy, Report- er Everyone is invited to join us for coffee and fellow- ship at 9:20 a.m. each Sun- day morning before Sunday school. We are currently taking donations for any canned or non-perishable items for the new food bank we have here at the church for any family of the church in need. Leave donations in the foyer. Any questions? Ask Pastor Ter- ry or Jim Dickerson. Thought for the week... On the table side by side, The Holy Bible and the T V Guide. One is well worn and cherished with pride, but that one is not the Bible, it's the T V Guide. As the pages are turned what shall they see? It doesn't matter, just turn on the T V. Then is the confu- sion started for they can't all agree, what they shall watch on that old T V. So they refer to the Book in which they all confide, but it's not the Bi- ble, it's the T V Guide. The Word of God is sel- dom read, maybe a verse or two just before bed. Ex- hausted and sleepy, tired as can be, not from reading the Bible, but from watching T V. Then back to the table, side by side, The Holy Bible and the T V Guide. No time for prayer, no time for the Word. The plan of salvation is seldom heard. Forgive- ness of sin so full and free, we find in the Bible and not on T V. Be in prayer this week for the pastor, the lost, the sick, our church, our coun- try and leaders, and always each other. God's blessings on you this week. Try to be kind and show God's love because every- one is fighting some kind of battle. If you don't have a church home, we invite you to any of our services. Terry Beadles, Pastor Kathy Henderson, Re- porter Sunday worship 10 :30 a.m. We have a nursery for chil- dren up to the age of seven and we also have a van route in Petersburg to pick anyone up. Come visit us, our doors are always open to you. "Saints and sinners" As a boy, French poet Ana- tole France was fascinated by the story of Simeon Styl- ites, a Christian ascetic saint who tried to achieve holi- ness by living atop a pillar for 37 years. Young Anatole decided to try something similar by placing a chair atop the kitchen table. His mother, however, wasn't a fan of his methods. She made him climb down from his perch before din- nertime, which led the boy to proclaim, "I perceive it is a very difficult thing to be a saint while living with your family." Office hours: 9-noon, Monday-Friday. Phone: 354- 6844. Boyd Heldring, Pastor Amy Melhiser, Secretary to study to show thy self ap- proved, to be instant in sea- son. If the Word is not put in you then when the time comes to be instant, listen- ing to the Spirit, you will not be ready. Also remember faith comes by hearing and hear- ing of the word. Put the Word in you and be prepared to be used of God. He is an awesome God and if you don't know Him, He is just a breath away. Just call His name and life will never be the same. To God be the glory. George Bruce, Pastor
