Taylor, of Pe- tersburg, are urging him to make the race for governor on the democratic ticket, says an Evansville dispatch. Mr. Taylor is an ex-member of congress and has been prominent in democratic pol- itics in the first congressio- nal district for a number of years. He and John W. Spen- cer, of Evansville, are dele- gates from the first district to the St. Louis national con- vention. Judge Thomas H. Dillon, of Petersburg, for- mally announced his candida- cy for the governorship sev- eral weeks ago. This makes three democratic candidates from Southern Indiana, Wm. Cullop, of Vincennes, being the other candidate—Da- viess County Democrat. Spurgeon Items—John Parker, who lived several years in Pike county, died Saturday at his home in Lyn- nville of measles, aged 75 years. He was buried Sun- day at Mt. Zion, near his late residence. Last Sun- day, the crack baseball club of Lynnville came here, accompanied by the Lyn- nville brass band and crossed bats with the Spurgeon Stars, which resulted in an easy victory for the latter, with a score of four to fifteen. Mrs. Lucinda Warner, living near here, died Wednesday morn- ing at 6 o'clock, of consump- tion, aged about 30 years. Otwell News—Everett Abbott is fast improving in health and will soon leave for Chicago where he has a position with the Pennsylva- nia railroad company. Otwell is preparing to cel- ebrate the 4th of July in grand style. Otwell always has a big crowd and a good time on such occasions. We expect a big delegation from Peters- burg; don't disappoint us. Arthur Items—We had quite a thunderstorm last Saturday evening. Lighten- ing struck George Skinner's large straw stack and burned it. The Linton coal company are still drilling south of Ar- thur and meeting with good success. There is a world of coal in this part of the coun- ty. T. W. Shoulders, the en- terprising farmer and ma- chine agent of our town, re- alizes that the boom is com- ing and is getting ready for it. He has built a large res- ervoir on his farm just north of Arthur. Tom says that you can't boom things with- out water, for it takes water to make steam. Arthur is a town south of Winslow three miles and in the heart of the oil field, where W. L. Davis & Co. have struck oil and are drilling more wells. Here is a good opening for capital- ists to invest their money in manufacturing plants. Plen- ty of good coal and no doubt plenty of natural gas, though it has not been fully devel- oped, yet every indication points to an immense quanti- ty. We have an excellent farm- ing country and one that is extremely healthy. Winslow Bridge Demolition—1997 Pictured is the demolition of the winslow Bridge in 1997 on Highway 61.
