She said they turn out juicy and tender. Re- cently while perusing Facebook, I came across a recipe that uses root beer instead. In addition, a side dish is added into the recipe. Two for one! Enjoy! Source: tasteof home.com IngREDIEnTS yOU'LL nEED: COOkIng DIRECTIOnS: 1-1/2 pounds small red potatoes, halved 1 cup root beer 1 cup ketchup 1 tablespoon brown sugar 2 teaspoons chili powder 2 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 2 tablespoons all- purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 3/4 teaspoon pepper, divided 1/2 teaspoon salt, divided 4 bone-in pork loin chops (7 ounces each) 2 tablespoons olive oil 2 tablespoons butter 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder 1. Place potatoes in a large saucepan and cover with water. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and cook for 15 -20 minutes or until tender. 2. Meanwhile, in a small bowl, combine the root beer, ketchup, brown sugar, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce and garlic powder; set aside. 3. In a large resealable plastic bag, combine the flour, ½ teaspoon pepper and ¼ teaspoon salt. Add pork chops, one at a time, and shake to coat. 4. In a large skillet, cook chops in oil over medium heat for 2-3 minutes on each side or until chops are lightly browned; drain. Add root beer mixture. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat; cover and simmer for 6 -8 minutes or until a thermometer reads 145°. Re- move pork and keep warm. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving. 5. Bring sauce to a boil; cook until liquid is reduced by half. 6. Meanwhile, drain potatoes; mash with butter, garlic powder and remaining salt and pepper. Serve with pork chops and sauce. Meals in Monica's Minutes By Scott A. Hartley Technology columnist Three weeks ago, eBay alerted all its users to change their passwords because their databases containing encrypted passwords and other non-financial data had been hacked. Although no evidence of the hackers us- ing the stolen passwords had been detected, eBay wants their users to be safe rather than sorry. This is unfortunately be- coming a common occur- rence — secure websites be- ing hacked and passwords or other personal information be- ing stolen. If you're like most com- puter users, you violate the most basic tenants of creat- ing and using secure pass- words on the various web- sites you visit. Why do we do this? Because it's just too darn hard to remember unique passwords for every differ- ent website! Not to mention the varying complexity re- quirements some sites im- pose. ( You know, the sites demanding that your pass- word contain one capital let- ter, one lowercase letter, two numbers and one symbol.) Honestly, though, it 's not too difficult to come up with easy-to-remember pass- words that are nearly impos- sible for hackers to guess or crack. Here are a few tips: avoid usiNg The same password We all do this, but it's a BIG no-no. Using the same password for everything puts your entire identity at risk should it become compro- mised. For example, if Amazon. com gets hacked and some- one steals your password, and you use that same pass- word for your online bank- ing account and credit card accounts, the thieves could potentially gain access to all of your financial information. avoid usiNg CommoN words Hackers use sophisticated tools for cracking passwords. They use different diction- aries that search a variety of combinations of English words, names, foreign words, phonetic patterns, capitali- zations, symbols and more. These tools allow them to successfully crack almost 66 % of all passwords com- monly used. In 2013, A rs Techni- ca provided three experts a 16,000 -entry encrypted password file. It took them only a few hours to crack as few as 62 % of them and as many as 90 % of them. This means t hat pas s - words l ike "Crazy1046," "dolph!nsfan," a n d "A p r i l 0 57 5 " are not secure passwords. The rule to remember: Anything that can be remembered can be cracked. simple way To CreaTe a memorable password Bruce Schneier, a securi- ty technologist, developed a scheme to create easy-to-re- member, but hard-to-crack passwords. He writes, "So if you want your pass- word to be hard to guess, you should choose something that this process will miss. My advice is to take a sen- tence and turn it into a pass- word. Something like "This little piggy went to market" might become "tlpW EN- T2m". That nine-character password won't be in any- one's dictionary. Of course, don't use this one, because I've written about it. Choose your own sentence — some- thing personal. "Here are some examples: • WIw7,mstmsritt... — When I was seven, my sis- ter threw my stuffed rabbit in the toilet. • Wow...doestcst — Wow, does that couch smell terri- ble. • Ltime@go-inag~faaa! — Long time ago in a galaxy not far away at all. • TVM,TPw55:utvm,tp wstillsecure — Until this very moment, these pass- words were still secure. "You get the idea. Com- bine a personally memorable sen- tence with some personally mem- orable tricks to modify that sen- tence into a pass- word to create a lengthy password. Of course, the site has to accept all of those non-alpha- numeric charac- ters and an arbi- trarily long password. Oth- erwise, it's much harder." But again, DON'T use the same password on all the websites! aN easy way To keep TraCk of passwords Because it's best practice to use a unique password for every website that requires one, you need an easy way to keep track of them. The best program I've dis- covered and use is a program called LastPass. For only $12 per year, the premium ver- sion allows you to save login information for all your web- sites in one easy-to-access location. Once saved, Last- Pass can even automatically fill in the login information when you visit the website — so that you don't have to type it in each time you vis- it the website. The premium version al- so allows you install the soft- ware on all your mobile de- vices — phones and tablets, giving you access to your saved logins and passwords no matter where you are. You can check it out at http://www.lastpass.com. Stay safe — create and use strong, unique passwords! Scott Hartley is the Pres- ident/CEO of Calibre Com- puter Solutions in Prince- ton.
