However, after his No. 1-ranked Lady Knights lost to No. 4 Gibson Southern 4-1 at Brown County's Eagle Park, Barrett was anything but displeased. "You know, we have had an outstanding year," said Barrett, a 1981 graduate of Pike Central High School who took over as head coach last year following seven years as an assistant. "The kids have been awesome. They have put in the time. We've had back- to-back trips to the semi-state. We have noth- ing to complain about. I mean, we have had a great year." "It's not where we wanted to finish up," added Barrett, a former professional base- ball pitcher who appeared in four games with the Montreal Expos in 1988. "It's disappoint- ing in one aspect but yet it's been a big enjoy- ment for everybody." Barrett's youngest daughter, Ellen, was a senior third baseman on this year's team who stroked 15 home runs. During Saturday's semifinal loss, Ellen Barrett gave the Lady Knights a 1-0 lead when she singled with two outs in the first inning, stole second and scampered home on a hit by senior centerfielder Morgan Walter. In the fifth inning, with two out and run- ners on first and third, and the Lady Titans holding a 3-1 lead, Gibson Southern head coach Gary May had senior pitcher Bree- Ana Wilzbacher walk Ellen Barrett to load the bases. Lady Titan freshman Jaime Nurrenbern then replaced Wilzbacher and struck out Wolfer looking to end the inning. "Morgan Wolfer has been absolutely nails for us all year long," Tim Barrett said after- ward. "She had 42 RBIs for us this year out of that four-spot. She was our No. 2 hitter her sophomore and junior years and I moved her to four. She comes up in that situation . . . and it's just one of those things where the pitch- er made the pitch." Nurrenbern would hold South Dearborn (26 -2) scoreless in the sixth and seventh in- nings to get the save, then tossed a nine-hit shutout in a 6 -0 win over West Vigo in the semi-state championship game. Tim Barrett, whose Lady Knights lost to Tri-State Hendricks 6 -4 in the semi-state semifinals at Jasper last year while going 19- 6, said that coaching his daughter during her senior season was "awesome." "I started a fast-pitch club about 11 years ago with my oldest daughter, so all these kids have come through our fast-pitch se- lect teams, and I've coached my daughter, El- len, since she was 12, so we've been together for a lot of years," he said. "That's always a lot of fun when you get to coach your own kid." "We have a great relationship," Tim Bar- rett added. "She's one of those kids that gets done with basketball practice and says, 'Dad, can we hit? ' So I've never had to ask her. She's always been there to do it, and that's so fun."
