Survivors and committed citizens of Cleveland County who are dedicated to winning the battle against cancer, came to the “Relay For Life” rally at the Cleveland County Fairgrounds on Friday, May 21. The event lasted 24 hours. This was a celebration of life and a chance for many to show their determination that a cure for cancer will be found. It was announced that Cleveland County has raised $4 million dollars since the inception of “Relay For Life”. It was a magnanimous achievement and outward sign of our commitment to the cause. “The Spirit of Relay” Award was presented to Ed Minor, a cancer survivor who is continuing to fi ght everyday. He constantly fi ghts overwhelming odds to survive. Mr. Minor is deeply involved in gathering support for Relay For Life. He is truly a role model. He constantly seeks to do anything he can to fi ght cancer and bring about a cure. His special recognition was given among tears and with the support of his grandchildren. The dedicated people of Cleveland County stayed all night and joined in with a togetherness that only such a life threatening disease can inspire. Andrews –M.A. As his winning Uncle gets ready to cross the fi nish line, six year old nephew Grayson surprises Uncle David and joins in the fi nal run. David Sokolofsky from Wilmington, North Carolina won his third "Over The Mountain" Triathlon. His assigned number among the participants, written on his left arm, was appropriately #1! Sokolofsky was a previous winner in 2006 and 2008. What unanimously was considered the best ever "Over The Mountain Triathlon" sponsored by the City of Kings Mountain turned out a bevy of participants from all over the country. The event was the Kings Mountain’s"Over The Mountain Triathlon" result of intense planning, which in- cluded adding a new running course to the three challenges. The 12th an- nual event has garnered a reputation nationally for total excellence. The repeated comment that was heard is that participants could not wait until next year to return. They could not say enough good things of how this Kings Mountain event has become one of the absolute best. The annual triathlon has become a Cleveland County pre- mier event. This years winner, David Sokolofsky, had a time of 2 hours, 10 minutes, and 26 seconds. Everyone who participated or came out to be a part of this 12th annual event enjoyed a great time. –M. A. Andrews We Will Always Remember As Chaplain Glenn Davenport proclaimed the mission of law enforcement offi cers oath "To Serve and Protect", he reminded us all that we should never forget. On Friday, May 21, the Cleveland County Law Enforcement Day took place in the park next to the Shelby Police Station. It was a day to remember those who had died in service to Cleveland County. The names of those who made the supreme sacri- fi ce were recited: Sheldon Jones, 1901, Shelby Police Chief; Edgar Hamrick, 1904, Shelby Police Chief; Sanford Pruitt, 1931, Cleveland County Sheriff Department; Ewart W, Sand- ers,1933, Cleveland County Sheriff Department; Donald Hendrson, 1968, Kings Mountain Police Department; and George Allen, 1974 Sheriff of Cleveland County. Then a mo- ment of silence and prayer as taps was played. A fl ower was placed in the memorial wreath for each Cleveland County hero as a tribute and thanks. –M. A. Andrews Offi cers representing the Shelby Police, Kings Mountain Police, Cleveland County Sheriff's Department and North Carolina State Trooper's all were present to pay homage to those who gave their lives for our county.
