The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, May 13, 2011 10 ever: the Food Network has added “Hungry Girl” to its Sunday morning lineup for the month of May. A/ Olsego Manor B/Warm Solutions 2 x 2.5 ‘Hungry’ for success: Cooking Channel series gets boost on Food Each half-hour episode fea- tures slimmed-down recipes of beloved comfort foods, fea- turing everything from pulled pork to brownies and even cocktails. For instance, this Sunday’s episode looks at new spins on everyone’s fa- vorite fast-food dish, pizza. Lillien offers up several recipe ideas, including a breakfast pizza. There’s also a thin-crust white pizza that’s just 200 calories per serving, and a pizza topping-laden chicken at 280 calories per serving. Those nutritional numbers seem low compared to typi- cal fast-food fare, so what’s the secret? Besides portion control, Lillien favors the use of low-fat or calorie-reduced substitutions, including low- fat tomato soup to replace sugar-filled pizza sauce. Sub- stituting the carb-heavy dough with high-fiber fare -- or just using eggs for the breakfast pizza -- also helps to lower the sodium, carbo- hydrate, sugar and fat totals. It’s a good concept for those looking to control their weight without necessarily giving up the foods they love and crave. But it does have its detractors too -- some follow- ers have expressed some ap- prehensions about substitut- ing familiar ingredients for those that have been artifi- cially produced. Lillien is not a nutritionist; Lisa Lillien prepares diet-friendly recipes in “Hungry Girl” TV Media I f the name Lisa Lillien doesn’t sound familiar, you may know her better by her online identity: Hungry Girl. Especially if you are among her one million subscribers. Through Lillien’s website, www.hungry-girl.com, and her daily electronic newslet- ters, the former media execu- tive-turned-low calorie guru has been offering up low-fat recipes, tips, tricks and prod- uct reviews for the diet-con- scious. She’s also taken her treasure trove of knowledge to the small screen thanks to her series on Cooking Chan- nel. And now, Lillien could reach a larger audience than rather, her knowledge comes from first-hand experience as a consumer. After her own weight-loss battle, the former media executive came to be pretty savvy when it came to reading labels and evaluating nutritional content. To share that information with the hope it could benefit others, she set up her website and sent out her first electronic newsletter in April of 2004. Multiple columns, a televi- sion series and four bestsell- ing cookbooks later, Hungry Girl continues to strike a chord among those looking to battle the bulge without sacrificing the foods they love.
