The Daily Star, Oneonta, N.Y., Friday, May 13, 2011 2 coverstory Block of goodbyes CBS wraps up Monday night By Christina Davies TV Media T hings have been shaken up a bit at CBS lately, and the recent changes may be calling the future of the network’s current Monday night lineup into question. When viewers tune in for a night of season finales on Monday, May 16, they could be saying farewell to some of the network’s freshman fare. Bookended by two strong series -- “How I Met Your Mother” and “Hawaii Five-0” -- “Two and a Half Men” was the network’s Monday night anchor, until the antics of Charlie Sheen put a halt to the show’s production. Since its last episode aired on Feb. 14, ratings for the evening’s remaining shows have fallen off a bit, leaving viewers to wonder what will become of newcomers “Mike & Molly” and “Mad Love.” Fans of the other two Mon- day night shows have less to worry about, it seems. In March of this year, CBS announced that “How I Met Your Mother” would be re- newed through the 2012-13 season. There was no real sur- prise there, considering the show is the network’s high- est-rated series among young adults. In the release an- nouncing the renewal, CBS Entertainment president Nina Alex O’Loughlin stars in “Hawaii Five-0” Tassler said “HIMYM’s bril- liant producing team contin- ues to find inventive ways to tell funny stories that stir pop- culture conversation. It has become a go-to destination for top guest stars and its amazing ensemble cast brings to life characters that audiences want to hang out with every Monday night.” The show’s sixth season fi- nale on May 16 will be no ex- ception when it comes to guest stars, either. Chi McBride of Fox’s “Human Tar- get” will appear as a foreman who butts heads with Josh Radnor’s character, Ted, dur- ing the construction of one of Ted’s design projects. Dave Foley, probably most remem- bered for his role as Dave Nel- son on the long-running NBC workplace sitcom “NewsRa- dio” as well as being a mem- ber of the famed Canadian comedy troupe “The Kids in the Hall,” will be playing Mr. Bloom, an employee of an en- vironmental law firm inter- viewing Jason Segel’s charac- ter, Marshall, for a position. While CBS hasn’t officially announced the renewal sta- tus of “Hawaii Five-0,” TNT announced in April that it bought the off-network rights to the crime drama, virtually guaranteeing its safety from the chopping block. “’Hawaii Five-0’ is a top- notch procedural drama that has already built a strong fol- lowing,” said Michael Wright, executive vice-president and head of programming for TNT, TBS and TCM. “With its great characters, intriguing stories, smart sense of humor and ex- plosive action, ‘Hawaii Five-0’ is an ideal fit for TNT’s line- up.” The reboot of the ‘70s-era hit stars Alex O’Loughlin as Steve McGarrett, a second- generation cop who is in Ha- waii trying to piece together clues to his father’s murder, and Scott Caan as Danny “Danno” Williams, an ex- New Jersey detective trans- planted to the islands and do- ing his part to keep them safe. Caan has appeared in nu- merous films, most notably the “Ocean’s 11” franchise, and Aussie actor O’Loughlin won audiences over in the paranormal drama “Moon- A/Auto Boutique B/The Green Giraffe 2 x 2 light,” and most recently ap- peared on the big screen in last year’s Jennifer Lopez ve- hicle “The Back-Up Plan.” “Hawaii-Five-0” also features Daniel Dae Kim, who played Jin on the smash-hit series “Lost.” Viewers will also rec- ognize him from the Oscar- winning film “Crash” (2004). In the upcoming finale, Mc- Garrett and Williams come too close for comfort to Mc- Garrett’s nemesis, Wo Fat. The governor can no longer pro- tect the team from retaliation by Fat and his associates and they could face some serious consequences for their fast- and-loose policing tactics. When CBS ran out of “Two and a Half Men” episodes, it attempted to bump “Mike & Molly” up by half an hour to fill the 9 p.m. hole left behind, but quickly pushed it back to its original slot when ratings dropped, opting instead to re- broadcast old “Two and a Half Men” episodes. This may not bode well for the future of the show, which centers around an overweight couple who met and fell in love at an Overeaters Anony- mous meeting. Also uncertain is the future of “Mad Love,” a romantic comedy that marks Sarah Chalke’s return to prime time after the end of “Scrubs,” as well as Jason Biggs’s first for- ay into television as a leading man, after making a name for himself in the college-humor genre with the “American Pie” films. Chirstopher’s Coins 2 x 2 hollywoodQ&A By Adam Thomlison TV Media Q: My favorite movie growing up was “Harry and the Hendersons.” Who played that lovable creature? A: That “lovable creature” was played by a man who made a too-brief career out of playing creatures, both lov- able and otherwise. Kevin Peter Hall was a go-to guy for monster roles in the ‘80s, and in fact started his career with the role of Mutant Bear in the 1979 horror film “Prophecy.” Other early roles included The Alien in 1980’s sci-fi horror pic “Without Warn- ing” and the titular monster in 1986’s “Monster in the Clos- et.” “Harry and the Hendersons” is one of Hall’s most famous roles, partly because the Harry suit is the one he spent the most time wearing. He starred in the popular 1987 family comedy, and then donned the suit again for the first season of the TV version. Sadly, another actor had to take over for the subsequent two seasons. Hall died in 1991 of pneumonia after contract- ing HIV from a transfusion of contaminated blood. But he’ll always be best remembered for his title role in the 1987 classic “Predator” and its aptly titled 1990 sequel “Predator 2.” He’s only remembered by name, though, since he was stuck in an incredibly elaborate suit the whole time.
