County's jobless rate falls to lowest level in six years By Ed Cahill Pike County's jobless rate fell to 4.6 percent in April, ac- cording to preliminary fig- ures released by the Indiana Department of Workforce De- velopment on Friday, May 16. April's 4.6 percent jobless rate was one percentage point lower than the revised 5.6 per- cent unemployment rate Pike County recorded in March. Pike County's jobless rate during April was the county's lowest since April 2008, a span of six years, when it was 4.5 percent. According to estimates re- leased by the Indiana Depart- ment of Workforce Develop- ment, 5,581 of Pike County's labor force of 5,849 were em- ployed during April, leaving 268 persons without jobs. In April 2013, when Pike County's jobless rate was 6.3 percent, it was estimated that 5,365 of the county's labor force of 5,725 were employed, leaving 360 persons without jobs. In adjoining counties: • Daviess County's jobless rate fell from a revised 4.5 per- cent in March to a preliminary 3.8 percent in April. In April 2013, Daviess County's job- less rate was 5.1 percent. • Dubois County's jobless rate fell from a revised 4.4 per- cent in March to a preliminary 3.5 percent in April. In April 2013, Dubois County's jobless rate was 4.9 percent. • Gibson County's jobless rate fell from a revised 5.2 per- cent in March to a preliminary 4.5 percent in April. In April 2013, Gibson County's jobless rate was 6.1 percent. • Knox County's jobless rate fell from a revised 4.8 per- cent in March to a preliminary 4.2 percent in April. In April 2013, Knox County's jobless rate was 5.8 percent. • Warrick County's jobless rate fell from a revised 5.1 per- cent in March to a preliminary 4.6 percent in April. In April 2013, Warrick County's job- less rate was 5.8 percent. Statewide, county non-sea- sonally adjusted unemploy- ment rates fell in all 92 coun- ties from March to April. Dubois County registered the state's lowest unemploy- ment rate during April at 3.5 percent, which was down nine-tenths of a percentage point from 4.4 percent in March. Vermillion County, mean- while, had the state's highest unemployment rate during April at 8.2 percent, which was down 1.5 percentage points from 9.7 percent in March. Columbus had the state's lowest metropolitan statisti- cal area jobless rate in April at 3.9 percent, which was down eight-tenths of a per- centage point from 4.7 per- cent in March. The Evansville MSA jobless rate in April was 5.0 percent, which was down eight-tenths of a percentage point from 5.8 percent in March. In April 2013, the Evansville MSA's jobless rate was 6.4 percent. Michigan City recorded the state's highest MSA jobless rate in April at 7.3 percent, which was down 1.3 percent- age points from 9.6 percent in March. Indiana's seasonally ad- justed unemployment rate dropped to 5.7 percent in April, a two-tenths of a per- centage point decrease from March's 5.9 percent. The seasonally adjusted na- tional unemployment rate for April was 6.3 percent, which was down four-tenths of a per- centage point from March. The nation's seasonally-ad- justed jobless rate in April 2013 was 7.5 percent. March marked the ninth consecutive month that the Hoosier State experienced a decline in the unemployment rate. Indiana's jobless rate has decreased by 2.1 percentage points since April 2013, when it was 7.8 percent, and has re- mained below the national rate for the past four months. According to information released by the Indiana De- partment of Workforce Devel- opment, the Hoosier State add- ed 4,400 private sector jobs in April. Since July of 2009, the low point of employment in the state, Indiana has added a to- tal of 220,300 private sector jobs, one-third of which have come from the manufacturing sector alone (+75,200). Indiana's labor force in- creased by 11,700 in April, marking the seventh straight month of labor force growth. Additionally, Indiana's labor force participation rate ex- ceeded the national rate in April for the first time since July of 2009. "April's job numbers main- tained the positive economic trend for 2014 in the Hoosier State," said Indiana Depart- ment of Workforce Develop- ment Commissioner Scott B. Sanders. "Indiana's un- employment rate continues to drop because more Hoo- siers are going back to work as our labor force continues to grow, which is not the case with some of our neighboring states or the national trend as a whole." Sanders also noted claims for state unemployment in- surance in April were nearly 10,000 below April 2013 lev- els. Initial claims and contin- ued claims are now at levels not seen since 2000. Employment sectors show- ing gains in April included trade, transportation and util- ities (+2,000), financial activi- ties (+900), private education- al and health services (+800), construction (+ 600), manufac- turing (+500) and leisure and hospitality (+100). Among sectors showing declines in April was profes- sional and business services (-400). Total non-farm employment increased in April by 4,200. B-10 Wednesday, May 21, 2014 The Press-Dispatch
