Photographer? The Scene is hiring. E-mail resume and photo website to Cassandra Miller at editor@otownscene.com Feature film to premiere at Oneonta Theatre The Oneonta Theatre is hosting the premiere of a fea- ture film titled “Mineville” on Saturday. That’s right, there will be a movie premiere in Oneonta, complete with bona fide movie stars like Paul Sorvino of “Goodfellas” fame and William Adler, who has been in hits including “Shawshank Redemption” and “The Green Mile.” So, why Oneonta? Several area residents were involved with the film, including writer and director Lori Kelly-Bailey. She said the film was inspired by her fam- ily’s history as coal miners in the upstate town Mineville. (The story is fictional, but the depiction of a mining community during the turn of the century.) Kelly-Bailey said the film had been in the works for 12 years, and everything started falling into place after she and her son, Joel Plue, a co-producer of the film, moved back to Oneonta in 2005. “Everything started coming together in Oneonta,” Kelly-Bailey said. After moving back, she met Oneonta native Cuyle Carvin, who has a leading role in “Mineville.” She also became familiar with Oneonta-based cinematog- rapher Joe Stillman, who shot the movie in black and white. Some other area residents involved in the film are executive producer Michael Kendall and costumer Melissa Moss. Kelly-Bailey and Plue, 23, have been working together since Plue started doing comedy routines as a child. The two have been involved together in several shorter films, as well. They said they are excited about screening the film at the Oneonta Theatre, which they currently live above. “The first movie I ever saw was 50 years ago in that theater, and to go back there to premiere this movie just seemed right,” Kelly-Bailey said. The Horseshoe Lounge Playboys, who wrote the theme song for “Mineville,” will perform a short set before the screening of the movie Saturday. Carvin said he is flying into New York from LA on Saturday, and will be at the premiere before heading to New York City to start shooting another film Monday. “I’m glad I’m from a small town like Oneonta and a good community like that,” the 1999 Oneonta High School and 2003 Hartwick College graduate said. “I’m really excited to see what they did with (the Oneonta Theatre). I’m really, really glad they fixed it up.” Carvin has been in mostly low-budget films, and he said “Mineville” is one of the most prominent projects he has worked on. He plays Michael O’Roarke in the film, and Adler plays his father. Paul Sorvino got involved in the film because his son, Michael, had been involved in the project since 2000, Kelly-Bailey said. The two play the father and son “bad guys” in “Mineville,” and both will be at the Oneonta screening.
