Page 6 - Rutherford Weekly 828-248-1408 By KEVIN CARVER Three County Baseball eams Fall At Tourney Three County Baseball Teams Fall At Tourney For a school, who has accomplished about every baseball feat in this state, they still have to wait one more year before claiming a trophy that’s a little closer to home. East Rutherford (18-3) hosted the third annual Easter Baseball tourney last week and they have still yet to win it. East fell victim to T.C. Roberson the previous two years in the fi nals and lost to an always tough South Caldwell (4A) 4-3, in the semis last Wednesday. Chase (14-7) then makes a big statement with 11-0 win the following day for third place. Cavs coach Bobby Reynolds seemed to be on a mission to fi nd out more about his pitching staff in the game, but a shutout win over East Rutherford is a pretty big deal. Mitchell Paris led the way with 2 doubles and 3 RBI, while Trey Hester added a 2-RBI single. Jared Allen also had two hits in the contest for Chase. What maybe more impressive was Shane Pearson’s pitching performance to give up just four hits against a very explosive Cavalier offense. The series is now even this year and round three be- tween the two clubs heads to Chase, Thursday (today). East Rutherford won the fi rst meeting at East, 13-3. Come to think of it, the last time I can recall East Rutherford being shutout was in 2008 against South Caldwell. In 2007, they were shutout twice, once by North Davidson and the other time by North Lenoir. R-S Central lost three straight at McNair Field in a Brought to you to you by: FAST WA terrible week at the tourney. While they have already clinched a playoff spot, Central has just a couple of weeks to get the ship righted again. Thomas Jefferson girls soccer team (13-1-3, 8-1-3) could be hosting a fi rst round playoff game come May 11th. The Lady Gryphons Anna Dedmon scored twice and survived a 2-1 win against Polk County in overtime, last Saturday. If they can win both games this week, the No.1 seed out of the Western Highlands should be TJCA’s. In softball, Chase faced a possible 2A playoff foe at East Burke last Friday. Chase led for most of the game, holding a 4-2 advantage until Kayla Shelton’s three-run homer in the fi fth gave East Burke the 5-4 advantage. East Burke held on for a close 6-5 win. The two teams could meet again as early as the sec- ond round or in the fourth round at Chase. And not to downplay the East Rutherford-Chase softball game on Thursday, it should be a close one as well. As you have probably heard by now, with the No.1 se- lection Carolina picked Cam Newton in the NFL Draft. Is Carolina hoping that Cam could turn out to be the next Michael Vick? Well, we can skip Vick’s path of going to jail, but if Newton could make that kind of an impact for the Panthers at quarterback…what a nice turn of events that would be.
