The Lancers drew 13 walks and scored 12 runs in the fourth inning to beat rival Brookfield East 13-3 in a five-inning Greater Metro Conference game at Central last month. "East gave us all we can handle. Welcome back from Easter break," Central coach Doug Lange said. "They played really well but gave it to us with all the walks. Winning ugly is still winning." Of the 13 total walks given up by East pitchers, eight came in Central's 12- run fourth inning. East's Alyssa Boltik started the game, and East had a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. She had given up just two hits and issued five walks – three in the first inning. Then, East just couldn't get it over the plate. Courtney Cain led off the inning with a walk, and Rachel Bucholtz reached on an infield single. After a strikeout, Allie Smyczek singled to load the bases with one out. The first run of the inning scored on a wild pitch. Boltik walked the next two batters and was relieved by Haley Knight. Knight struck out the first batter she faced, but walked the next four. In Bucholtz's second at-bat, she lined a ball up the mid- dle that hit Knight on her pitching hand. Boltik came back in and Knight returned to right field. Boltik walked the next two batters. Then, an error and a double – Central's fourth and final hit of the inning – came on back-to- back at-bats until Boltik struck out the final batter of the inning. Central sent 16 batters to the plate in the fourth. "We had the game, but the pitchers walked a few," East coach Ashley Webber said. "We just didn't have the pitching stats. We played through adversity. We played tough and fierce. We just didn't come out on top. "You've got to absorb the loss and take something from it, and you've got to move on." Central starter Crystal Sicard had no problem pitching. She gave up just two hits and walked one batter. The two hits were inside-the-park-home runs. There were more unique occurrences in this game. Sicard had four of her 10 strikeouts in the second inning. East's Megan Foley reached on a dropped third strike. Foley later scored after a sacrifice and an error. East was also credit- ed for a double play after an interference call in the bottom of the second. "We came out flat and couldn't get the ball into the outfield," Lange said. "Crystal threw a real good ball game. She's been throwing 10 strikeouts per game in all four games. I thought she did fine." Email: pneumuth@conleynet.com By Tony Mooren Freeman Correspondent BROOKFIELD – What does having Angie Chartier in the lineup mean? "This game shows what a difference having her in the lineup means," Brookfield Central High School softball coach Doug Lange said after the senior shortstop went 4 for 4 with a home run, scored three runs and drove in three runs in a 12-1 Greater Metro Conference victory over crosstown rival Brookfield East last month, the day after a 13-3, five- inning victory. Chartier also walked in what she termed "a pretty good game" and added, "it was a fun game, too." Part of the fun was a five- run first inning that imme- diately put the Lancers in the driver's seat and the Spartans on their heels. "We always do better when we start off strong – when our energy starts right away," Chartier said. Chartier, a captain and four-year starter, was out of the lineup with the flu in Central's lone loss of the season against Menomonee Falls, and she is one of the team's leading hitters. The quick start certainly energized sophomore start- ing pitcher Crystal Sicard, who yielded only three hits while striking out 11 and walking only one. "I'm not the only one on the field, so I need everyone behind me and a good start like that is good," she said. Sicard finished Central's first-inning scoring with a two-run single. "In that at-bat, I was just ready to hit," she said. "I felt as if that's what the whole team felt." It was a strange first inning in that one batter hit out of order, but the mis- take was discovered after another hitter had taken one pitch so, by rule, she was simply skipped in the order. Still, Central sent 10 hit- ters to the plate and collect- ed six of its 11 hits. "It's hard to get momen- tum back when you lose it in the first inning like that," East coach Ashley Webber said. Holly Knight replaced her sister, Haley, on the mound in the third inning and allowed only one earned run in the next four innings. But the Lancers still scored with the aid of seven East errors and a few more mental errors. "We had errors and they had timely hitting," Webber said. "We didn't put up the defense like we have in the past and we've been work- ing hard on defense. What I saw last year was a good amount of errors, so I've been pushing defense from the start. This was like our first unraveling. We had been pretty tight on defense." Chartier's home run in the second inning made it 6- 0, and it was a 7-1 game in the top of the fifth inning when three errors and three walks – no hits – led to three more runs and a 10-1 lead. Another error and an RBI double by sub Kailee John- son made it 12-1 in the sev- enth inning. Freshman center fielder Kate Dobrzynski, Central's leadoff hitter, also had a solid showing with two hits, two runs scored, two stolen bases and an RBI. Emma Megal, East's cen- terfielder and leadoff hitter, reached base twice, stole three bases and drove in her team's lone run in the third inning after right fielder Alyssa Boltik singled and went to second on a sacri- fice. "Our highlight was the girls stayed up and were still swinging the bat, which isn't easy to do," Webber said. "But to battle through seven innings shows our character."
