Valid only with coupon. By Daniel Mike Freeman Staff BROOKFIELD – Dan Wandrey won't need to change much of his coach- ing wardrobe. After 16 seasons of gath- ering Brookfield Central High School gear as head coach of the girls basket- ball team, Wandrey has a solid collection of shirts emblazoned with the school's logo. While he'll need to slide a few shirts out of the rota- tion, he can still wear many of his old shirts after being selected to take over as head coach of the boys basketball team. "Somebody asked me today if it was something I always wanted," Wandrey said of the switch. "I don't think of it like that. We were fortunate enough to have done what we did in our girls program, and that was great. "I've always been aware of what was going on on the other side, so to speak. It wasn't something where I said, 'Oh, if Mark (Adams) leaves I'm taking the boys job. ... It's a new challenge, exciting, differ- ent from what I've done. That brings a lot of anxiety and stress – which I think is good." Wandrey left quite a mark on the girls program at Central. After taking over in 1998, Wandrey led the girls team to a 262-141 mark over 16 seasons. That run includes two trips to the WIAA Division 1 state tour nament and five Greater Metro Conference titles. While he admitted leav- ing the girls currently in the program was diffi- cult, Wandrey is excited to continue coaching at Cen- tral. "It's a school I've taught at, an athletic director I've worked with, other coaches I've worked with, adminis- trative staff I've worked with," said Wandrey, who is also an assistant boys golf coach at Central. "There's an exciting new twist to it, but it's where I am and where I've been. There's a comfort to that." Wandrey knows there are some big shoes to fill, as Adams won 243 games dur- ing his time at Central and most recently led the Lancers to a 26-1 record in 2013-14. "I'm at a point in terms of age and point in my career where we've accomplished a great deal that I'm so proud of with my girls pro- gram," Wandrey said. "Given the circumstance, with the point in my life and the point where the boys program is, I look at this opportunity and how intriguing and attractive it is. If I don't take advantage it will probably never come around again." Central went 21-4 this winter, finishing second in the GMC at 11-3. "I love the girls we have in the program," Wandrey said. "When I met with them, it was a difficult dis- cussion to have. You look in the room and, having been here 16 years, there are girls you've known since they were in fourth grade. "It wasn't an easy deci- sion by any means. But there's the excitement of something new and a dif- ferent challenge that I couldn't pass up." He admits that there will be some changes in his coaching next season, but deep down a lot will be the same. There will still be five players on each side, playing on the same-sized court and dribbling an orange ball. "The basketball part is the basketball part," Wan- drey said. "There's differ- ences, obviously, in the game. Maybe not as much now that Caleb (Mortag) is gone, but the boys game is more above the rim and might be a bit faster here or there. There will be some adjustments from that standpoint. "Athletes are athletes. There are some things you have to do different. When it comes down to motiva- tion and putting them in position to be successful, I have experience in all those areas."
