By Kirsten Klahn Special to The Freeman BROOKFIELD – You don't need to have a green thumb to grow a veg- etable garden. In fact, all it takes is an under- standing of some of the basics. But, before planting, start planning, said Chris Simon, who operates Simon's Gardens, 14780 W. Greenfield Ave., Brookfield. First, pick a sunny spot. Simon said he also recommends doing a soil test, which will give gardeners a bet- ter idea of what fertilizers the veg- etables will need. It can be done in the spring, but ideally should be done in the fall, Simon said. Getting started Two key things to keep in mind: temperature and seasons. Before purchasing vegetables, study up on the different temperature require- ments. For early spring, peas, onion plants, potatoes, strawberries, rasp- berries, rhubarb, and anything in the cabbage family will grow well, Simon said. For spring to late spring, tomatoes, cucumbers, zuc- chini, eggplant, herbs, peppers and beans are great options. If beginners want to start with a safe option, begin with transplants, rather than seeds, which can be picked up at a garden center, Simon said. It's also OK to start small, said Ann Wied, a horticulture educator at the Waukesha County University of Wisconsin Extension. Start with just a few vegetables, which can be planted in the ground or even a container, Wied said. "If you grow plants in a few small- er containers and have lettuce, onions and radishes, you have enough to grow for a salad," she said. Wied said she recommends begin- ners start with radishes, carrots, peppers or onions. All four are fairly low maintenance, she said. Comfort Keepers told Ken they had the perfect caregiver for him and that has proven to be just the case. Ken says "Rita has seen me through a lot over the years"-a knee replacement, other health issues including an infection that went to his heart….he was not expected to live through the night. Caregiver Rita has stuck by him through it all. Ken says "one of our favorite things to do was to go out for lunch." Now that he is homebound, Rita will go out and pick food up from their favorite restaurant so they can share a meal together. Ken laughs and says that "he and Rita have been together for 10 years, and there are a lot of marriages that don't last 10 years." Ken said that he even shared his precious Green Bay Packers tickets with Rita and she has shared pictures of her grandchildren with him. Rita's husband has retired and she said that if not for her and Ken's friendship, she would retire as a caregiver also. Why Comfort Keepers? Comfort Keepers' creed "to treat each and every client as if they are a family member," best matched local Comfort Keeper's franchise Shar Meller's own philosophy and Christian values. According to Shar, each caregiver has been screened, bonded, insured and trained with credit, motor vehicle and criminal background checks performed. Bonding insurance gives their clients peace of mind and takes away the fear of having a new person enter the home. Comfort Keepers Ranked #1 in Senior Care!
