Tournament hours are Safelight til 3pm and it will blast off and weigh-in at Whittenburg Access. Entry fee is $60 per boat with an optional $5 big fish pot. There will be door prizes, t-shirts, hats, fishing lures and more. Entry forms can be found at the Bass Shack, Great Outdoors add D & N Minimart. For more info go to burnsbands.org or call Shane Glover @ 704-477-0847. This is a good event and for a good cause. Anyone who has ever had a child in band, you know the band has to foot the bill for most everything they do. If you can, please try to make this tournament. Kosa The retirees fished Lake Hickory last week, and there was a tie for first place. John Black and Roger McNeely tied with the team of David O'Shields and Doug Sparrow. Both teams brought in 13.6. David and Doug had big bass with a 4.1 laregmouth. Tommy Wess and James Haynes had 7.0 and were third. This week the retirees head back to Lake Wylie. Moss I have two weeks worth of results from Moss Lake and the weekly Thursday night tournaments. The first one had 26 boats and was won by Mitch McCracken and Chet Beam with 11.35. Chuck Camp and David Hendrick had 10.35 and took second. There was a tie for third between the teams of Johnny and Reggie Guffey and Chris Caroll and Earl Rice. Both teams tipped the scales with 6.91. J R Garland and Ronnie Beason rounded out the top five with 5.94. Big bass was a 5.56 brought in by McCracken and Beam. Last week, 22 boats made the trip. Chad Green and Jared Bolton picked up the win with 10.65. Matt Arey and Bryan Thrift had 9.52 and were second, followed by Chris Hoopaugh and Tom Gavin with 9.03. J R Garland and Ronnie Beason had 8.16 and took fourth and Johnny Guffey fished solo and settled in fifth with 7.56. Big bass this week was a 4.02 largemouth. Arnold ask me to remind everyone that the first Saturday in May will be the annual benefit tournament on Moss Lake. Event times are 8am-2pm. Entry fee is $60. I used to spend more time learning about new gadgets but now I sort of just maintain until I'm forced to adapt or be left behind. One of the things that I'm trying to adapt to is my digital camera. I know, I know, don't laugh. I've actually had the camera for a couple of years but all I've been doing is taking pictures the simplest way I could. I thought all of the buttons where there so they could sell it for more. (I feel the same way about my cell phone. Why can't they just give me big numbers, lots of volume, and plenty of light?) I digress. I've always wanted to take pictures while I'm hunting or fi shing but I never knew how to set up the timer feature. So this year I was de- termined (forced) to learn. I was tired of looking at all my pictures and always having the check-in station in the background. It sort of lost the effect of the hunt. This turkey season I've become a picture taking monster. I carry my bipod and my camera and have taken some really neat shots of me holding a turkey while in the woods. I love it. Now while I've really enjoyed the more realistic pictures, they still don't tell the story of each hunt. Each photo still has only three basic features; me, a turkey, and the woodsy background. The story is up to me to remember, relish, and share. If I were to show you one of these pictures you would simply admire the bird but be clueless to the effort that was involved in getting that gobbler from the limb to the lens. You might have assumed that it was an easy and effortless hunt and you may be wrong or right. When you and I look at each other we often do the same thing. We take a mental picture and quickly add our own story whether that story is accurate or not. We may assume that a person is rude or kind, arrogant or humble, aloof or approachable. How- ever, most of the time, we just don't know. Life is so much better when we give others the benefi t of the doubt. It seems that we all default to seeing the bad and the negative. It's the fi rst button we learn to use on our mental camera. Maybe it's time we all real- ized there are other features that may give us a better look. And maybe it's time we learned to use them. By By Gary Miller Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ GARY MILLER gary@outdoortruths.org ~ www.outdoortruths.org APRIL BASS A warm spring rain can raise water temperatures, and bass moving from their winter haunts to spawning beds are looking for warmer water. Fish sometimes move quickly to coves where warm water is entering. If water rises quickly after a rain, find newly flooded log jams that draw fish in the backs of coves and creeks. Be mobile in the spring. April is a good time for big bass that carry extra weight in the form of eggs, but they are on the move. They may not be in the same places two days in a row. Start in the upper, shallow end of a lake early in the spring and then work your way toward the deeper, dam end of the lake as the days progress. Fish 8- to 15-feet deep in areas that hold prespawn fish waiting for ideal conditions to move onto their beds. Look for secondary points, dock pilings, drop-offs, and grass beds just beyond the gravel flats in the back of coves that become home to the spawning beds.
