Be On The Lookout For An ELF! Dr. Philip Jiamachello, a pediatric dentist in Shelby, is the proud owner of this unique ELF mobile. The ELF (which stands for Electric Light Fun) is a solar/electric battery-powered car/bicycle hybrid mode of transportation and is Dr. Jiamachello's preferred transportation to and from work. ELFs are American made by Organic Transit in Durham, North Carolina, and weigh about 130 pounds. The trikes feature head lights, tail lights, brake lights, bell and horn, and direction signals. The ELF can be driven manually like a bicycle or electroni- cally and produces speeds up to 20 mph when the electric motor is engaged. It can go for 1,800 miles on the energy equivalent of a gallon of gasoline. Dr. J purchased the 53rd ELF manufactured. The 15th annual Firehouse BBQ Cook-off, sponsored by the Kings Mountain Fire Department, was held on Friday and Saturday, April 21st-22nd at the Walking Track Park beside the YMCA. This cook-off is a Kansas City Barbecue Society sanctioned event. Proceeds benefit the chari- ties of the Fire Department. Fifty-three teams compet- ed for this year's honors. Although the rain soaked the grounds, it didn't deter the teams from competing. "We're expecting teams from all over the country. This is a big deal in the world of bar- becue cooking competitions and winning here leads to the National Championship in Kansas City," said KMFD Chief Frank Burns, organiz- er of the event. (L-R) Fireman, Bill Parker presents winning trophies to Scott Adams of the "Sauced! BBQ Team" along with his wife Joline, from Charlotte. Also pictured is Assistant Kings Mountain Chief, Jamie Black. Scott and his team won first in ribs; first in pork and second in brisket, becoming this year's Grand Champions! The team's win- nings totaled $5400. A Tradition Of Easter Egg Fighting Sugar Hill's yearly Easter Egg Fight was held Easter Sunday, April 20. Folks from surrounding counties arrived at dawn with colored eggs by the case, crate and basket loads. In this egg fi ghting event, the intention is not to break the shell on a human opponent. Instead, the eggs are tapped tip-to-tip and end to end. The tapping continues until one egg fi nally cracks under pressure. No historian, or for that matter anyone else, has kept record of the fi rst egg fi ght, but for more than a century, hundreds of people have gathered in Sugar Hill to see who boiled the toughest batch of eggs.
