The Board of Trustees of the Pike County Community Foundation announced the 2014 Lilly Endowment Com- munity Scholarship (LECS) for Pike County has been awarded to Kendall Duden- hoeffer. Kendall will receive full tu- ition to the In- diana college of her choice and a $ 900 yearly sti- pend for her re- quired books and equipment. Kendall plans to attend Saint Mary of the Woods and study equine training and instruction. Kendall is the daughter of John and Eileen Dudenhoeffer of Velpen. Kendall has been a mem- ber of National Honor Soci- ety during her junior and se- nior years. She has been a member of the United Way of Pike County board of di- rectors for the last two years. Kendall has been a member of swing choir throughout her high school career and participated in many plays and musicals. She has also been a member of the Pike Central swim team through all four years of high school. In announcing the award, David Flint, chairman of the Pike County Commu- nity Foundation's Scholar- ship Committee, remarked, "This is not an easy job, as all applicants are very de- serving." Committee members put in timeless hours reviewing all of the applications. Flint said, "All the students are outstanding, and it is truly not an easy decision." The Pike County Commu- nity Foundation's scholar- ship committee, comprised of volunteers from the com- munity, reviewed six appli- cations. The applications were scored based on a va- riety of factors including ac- ademic performance, com- munity service and volun- teer activities, a written es- say outlining future goals, work experiences, school ac- tivities and sports, and effec- tiveness in assigned leader- ship roles. All six students were interviewed to assess their verbal communication skills and civic pride and in- terest. After the scholarship committee completed its evaluation, names were sub- mitted to Independent Col- leges of Indiana, Inc. (ICI) for the final selection of the recipient and an alternate. ICI is a nonprofit corpo- ration that represents 32 re- gionally accredited degree granting, nonprofit, private colleges and universities in the state. The scholarships are the result of a statewide Lilly En- dowment initiative to help Hoo- sier stu- dents reach higher lev- els of edu- cation. In- diana ranks among the lowest states in the percentage of residents over the age of 25 with a bache- lor's de- gree. There were 142 scholarships awarded statewide. about the pike county community Foundation Founded in 1998, the Pike County Community Founda- tion is a charitable resource devoted to the local commu- nity.
