ADVERTISE IN SHELBY SHOPPER & INFO! www.shelbyinfo.com Thursday, March 31-April 6, 2011 Through A Woman’s Eyes By Martha Hynson Time Zones Time Zones [She] does not eat the bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praises her… Proverbs 31: 27-28 (NIV) The following is a conversation that occurred between my daughter and me last summer: Ally: “Mom, we really need to go bathing suit shopping. Could we go today? ” Me: “You’re working today.” Ally: “I get off at 4:30. We could go after that.” Me: “I’m not up to shopping for a bathing suit at the end of the day. We could go tomorrow morn- ing.” Ally: “What do you mean? 4:30 isn’t the end of the day!” Our internal clocks are definitely in separate time zones. I’m a morning person. I like to rise early and I’m most energetic at the beginning of the day. By late afternoon, I’m starting to fade. In fact, if you showed up at my house around 6:00 in the evening, you might very well find me in my pajamas. Ally, on the other hand, a typical teen, is just gearing up about the time I’m winding down. Though our energy levels peak at different times, however, one thing is true- we both need times of activity and times of rest. Proverbs 31 tells us that a virtuous woman “does not eat the bread of idleness.” One definition of idle is “not working, operating, producing or in use.” This definition can be misleading, however, because it can cause us to believe that we must always be “busy” at something when, in actuality, time that may seem idle can be some of the most productive. Having regular “down time” can help us think creatively. This is good because we will probably have to get creative in order to find this time. Susannah Wesley, who gave birth to 19 children, including Charles and John Wesley, used to pull her apron over her head when she wanted to have some quiet time to pray. I bet if we could talk to her today, she would say that having that time was essential in enabling her to accomplish what she had to do each day. During one of the busiest seasons of my life, I had a toddler, a preteen, and a teenager, worked part time, and went to school. I don’t remember ever pulling an apron over my head, but I did have to be creative in finding time to pray. I also don’t remember my family ever standing in honor of me, but they certainly did bless me, in countless ways. My husband supported us financially, but also took over lots of the cooking. My older daughter helped care for her sister, my son helped me with algebra, and everyone helped me on the computer! Things didn’t always run smoothly, of course. We certainly had the normal conflicts that go along with family life, but as I look back, I remember all the good. I also remember it as a time of spiritual growth, probably because I was at the end of myself and clung to God more than ever. In the midst of all the activity, the down time I was able to find was invaluable- and definitely not idle! As I write this, I’m aware that not all women have the support from their families that I’ve enjoyed. I know there are many moms out there who are beyond busy- mothers who desperately need encour- agement and support. I know some of these women personally. During my quiet times, I want to be sensitive to ways that God may be leading me to serve them and during my active times, I never want to be too busy to notice and reach out with practical help. I feel sure this is what the Proverbs 31 woman would do! (But, if someone needs me to take her swimsuit shopping, I hope it’s early in the day.) Do You Know Where Your Ad Dollars are Going?
