1 Relay for Life “Two days. One night. Two schools. One fight” was the slogan for the 2011 Relay For Life event hosted by the State University College at Oneonta and Hartwick College. The overnight event, which started at 7 p.m. Fri- day and ended at 7 a.m. Saturday, attracted 841 participants to the Alumni Fieldhouse on the SUNY Oneonta campus and raised more than $44,000 for the American Cancer Society while paying tribute to cancer victims and survivors. According to the American Cancer Society’s website, Relay For Life is the nonprofit organiza- tion’s “signature fundraising event.” “At Relay, teams of people camp out … and take turns walking or running around a track or path. “Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events,” the website explains. 2 The colleges’ joint Relay event included events such as a bra-flinging contest and performances by a cappella groups Not So Sharp and Hooked on Tonics, Stealing the Sky, Surviving Summer, Kris Cambria & the Homecoming Kings and Eric Luba. Greek organizations from both campuses con- ducted fundraisers, as well as Habitat for Human- ity, Rock to Cure, Colleges Against Cancer and women’s rugby. 1 2 3 4 20 O-Town Scene March 17, 2011 Tom Bee, a 19-year-old SUNY Oneonta student, was the bra- flinging contest winner. When asked how he acquired his bra flinging skill, he said he was just “a natural." A cappella group Not So Sharp performs on a stage as participants walk around the perimeter of the au- ditorium. The center of the room was taped off for people to camp out. Meghan Conroy, 19, (left) and Kimberly O’Brien, 20, SUNY One- onta students brought their bedding for added comfort at the overnight event.
