Continued from Page 12 Renovated and reopened in 2004, a sign above the front door of the stone building Cooley’s calls home states it was originally built in 1839. A small alcove at in the front window _ complete with a shamrock neon light _ is a popular spot as are the couches near the fireplace in the back. A dartboard and three TVs provide en- tertainment as do the bar’s frequent special events like spaghetti dinners, a yearly Super Bowl pool and a pulled pork slider eating contest during last month’s Cooperstown Winter Carnival. The menu is standard pub fare, from nachos and wings to sweet-potato fries and a claim to the village’s top burger. The spirits range from mixed drinks to Guinness and local brews like Ommegang and Cooperstown. On the wall are its famous four-person shot-skis _ literally a pair of wooden skis, each with four shot glasses attached, which are taken by four people simultaneously. Of course the word “Spirits” on the Irish pub’s sign refers to alcohol, but the dual meaning can’t be denied. The atmosphere inside the stone two-story building is always fun. The small staff quickly gets to know regulars, and even on the busiest of nights, the bartenders are seem- ingly always cheerful and friendly. This year, there may be no better spot for St. Patrick’s Day. _ Story and photos by Trevor Hayes COOLEY’S STONE HOUSE TAVERN 9 Pioneer St., Cooperstown 544-1311 March 17, 2011 O-Town Scene 13
