New Support Group for Depression and Bipolar Disorder Now people living with depression or bipolar disorder will have a new place to find hope, help and support. The local chapter of the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA) will host regular, confidential, peer-led, self-help support group meetings on Tuesdays from 6:30 – 8:00pm at The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer, Shelby. DBSA support groups are open to anyone who is diagnosed with a mood disorder, has a family member or friend who is diag- nosed, or who thinks they might have depression or bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression). DBSA support groups are not run by professionals, but instead offer peer- to-peer support which is an important component of recovery from mental illness for many people. DBSA is the nation’s leading patient-directed organization focusing on the most prevalent mental illnesses – depression and bipolar disorder. The organization has over 400 independent local chapters that operate over 1000 self-help support groups around the United States. Sign-up times will be 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. All league ages are as of January 1, 2011: Ages 8 & under; 10 & under; 12 & under; 14 & under. At sign-up time, you must have a copy of your birth certificate and a parent or guardian present. Fees are $22.00 for city residents and $37.00 for all others. Shelby Parks & Recreation 2011 Baseball & T-Ball Sign-Ups Sign-ups for baseball (leagues 8-17 years) will be held now through Friday-April 1st. Sign-up hours are 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Mondays-Friday. Special sign-up day will be Saturday, March 26th from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Sign-ups include Pee Wee Baseball (8-10 yrs), Little Tar Heel Baseball (11 & 12 yrs), Junior Tar Heel Baseball (13 & 14 yrs) and Senior Tar Heel Baseball (15-17 yrs). League ages are as of May 1st, 2011. When signing-up, a player must have a parent or guardian present and a copy of their birth certifi cate, if they did not play in the league last year. A $22 registration fee if player lives inside the city limits of Shelby or a $37 registration fee for all others is also required at sign-up. Both new and returning players must sign-up in order to be eligible to participate! Players involved with AAU or USSSA are welcome to register and play with City Park Leagues. T-Ball sign-ups (ages 5, 6 & 7 years) will be held Monday, April 4th through Friday, May 6th. League ages and registration requirements are the same as those above. GSCT To Hold Auditions For “Welcome To Mitford” GSCT Announces Auditions Greater Shelby Community Theatre will hold auditions for “Welcome to Mitford”, a play based on the popular book series by Jan Karon. The play is written by Bob Inman. Auditions will be held in the basement of the Arts Council on Washington St. on the square in Shelby. Auditions will be March 4 and 5 from 7-9pm and March 6 from 2-5pm. You will be asked to read from the script.There are roles for 13 men, 8 women, 1 teen boy, and 1 child. For more info, see www.gsct.org Spring Excursions at the Carrousel & Train Shelby City Park is offering six days in March for school groups to ride the Carrousel and/or the Rotary Train for free. No ticket or operator fee for groups who make a reservation during these days and times. The dates are March 8-10 and 22-24, the second and fourth weeks of March on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, from 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM. Call now to reserve a time that will work for you. You must reserve a group time one week in advance. Space is limited. This is to thank school and other groups for their patron- age during the year. For other dates other than our regular scheduled operating hours, you may set up a time to come and pay a $20.00 operating fee for each ride plus 50¢ per ride. Greater Shelby Community Theatre The Greater Shelby Community Theatre will present “HATS the Musical” at Keeter Auditorium in the Cleveland Community College campus. With music written by Pam Tillis and Kathie Lee Gifford, this production promises to be a fun-filled evening for women over 50 and their friends and families. Production dates are March 11, 12, 18 & 19 at 7:30pm and March 13 & 20 at 2:30pm. This fundraiser is to help Dana Hare’s Family. All you can eat BBQ is available for $10, which includes drink, chips and dessert. There will be live entertainment, a silent auction, raffles, cornhole tournament, games for the kids, cotton candy, candy apples, and much more. Kids 5 and under eat for $3. We will also have hotdogs. Dana works at Farm Bureau in Shelby. She has been in three local hospitals and seen numerous doctors in three counties since Nov. 12; however, she has not been given a diagnosis. Dana has some symptoms, similar to multiple sclerosis, but all tests came back negative. She has been referred to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida for further testing to find out what is wrong. She is a wife and mother to two young girls. With the mounting medical bills and traveling expenses back and forth to Jacksonville, Florida, this family could use your help.
