BFL-Lake Norman By Gary Miller By stop on Lake Norman last weekend with over 150 boats participating in the event. There was a tie for the win when all was said and done between Keith Kirby and David Williams. Both anglers brought in 16.12 to share the win. Third place went to Matt Haywood with 15.0 and close behind was Kevin Toler with 14.12. Rounding out the top five was Cliff Kirby with 13.09. Big bass of the day was a 7.05 largemouth brought in by shared first place angler Keith Kirby. Two anglers getting close to 17 pounds on Lake Norman is awesome. As a side note it took 12 pounds even to get a top 10. Kosa The Kosa retirees fished Lake Norman last week with Tom Mayhew and John Rankin getting the win with 8.60. John Black and Roger McNeilly grabbed second with 6.15 while Mack Wyatt and Johnny Christianberry took third with 5.20. Team Mayhew and Rankin also had big bass of the day with a 4.00 largemouth. In other words, devote a whole trip to fishing lures, techniques or places (or some combination of all three) that you have very little confidence in. What you’ll be doing is improving your versatility. Baits you otherwise wouldn’t try probably will fool a few fish. The casting or retrieve technique you generally won’t use will be effective, and a place or two you always passed by will give up a couple of fish. By the end of the trip, you’ll have picked up enough new ideas and approaches, as well as confidence in them, to improve your chances of catching fish every time out. (left) and Keith Kirby of Gaffney, SC (right) tied for the win at the Feb. 26th BFL North Carolina Division tournament on the Lake Norman to earn $3,849 each. I have to admit that I like watching fi shing on TV; Not the every day pro- grams, but tournament fi shing. The Bass Master’s Classic is one of my fa- vorites. In those shows you really get to see different techniques and strategies that are used and which ones may work best on that particular day and in a par- ticular environment. And you get to see the evolution of fi shing. One of the aspects I have noticed is how fi shing rods are continually be- ing constructed in a way that enhances one’s ability to feel the most sensitive bites. In the past, the difference was in the material the rod was made out of. Now not only are the rods more sen- sitive in reference to the material, but they are different in design, mainly in the grip area. It is thinner. Again, all for the purpose of enhancing our ability to feel. This smaller grip keeps a fi sher- man from gripping too tightly and thus increases his sensitivity to the slightest tug on the rod. This thought process has also infl u- enced the design of the newest bows in the archery fi eld. Here the grips are smaller to encourage an archer from gripping so tightly that he causes the bow to torque one way or the other so that he misses the target. The word of the day in fi shing and hunting is “For the best results, hold things loosely.” COME SEE THE EXPERT TRANSMISSION RANSMISSION Service & PSPECIALISTS PECIALISTS vice & Parts ts Work Guaranteed 734 Nallel y Dr. She b NC Shelbl y, NC 704-482-8756 Hal 704-482-8756 Hal Jimmy Jimmy Lyle yle FOR SALE FOR SALE RUSSIAN SKS, very good cond. $475. Thursday, March 3-March 9, 2011 BruceFISHINGu e Camp’s REPOR REPORT Local FISHING Outdoor Connection Outdoor Truths The Wal-Mart Bass Fishing League made a Gary Miller Aiming Outdoorsmen Aiming Outdoorsmen Toward Christ oward Christ Not only is this true in the outdoor world, but it is true in my own little world as well. I have found for the best results, I must hold to things loosely. I’m not talk- ing about people or relationships, but “things” – those possessions that I have been entrusted with – those things that can become my god instead of God. I have discovered the more I have to trust in God the easier it is for me to hold to things loosely. I have enjoyed this as- pect of faith. When I have held to things too tightly, I have discovered a torque. It is one that causes me to miss the real target of why I’m here. When I have held too tightly I have also discovered that I am less sensitive to the work of God around me. I am unable to clearly feel the tug of God on my heart and life. How’s your grip on “things?” Is it so strong that you are tired from holding on? Is it so tight that you can only feel your own pain from the grip, and not sense the pain of others? If the answer is yes, then you’re missing out on an unexplainable freedom, unlimited bless- ings, and an indescribable peace. Ask God today to loosen your grip and you will enjoy the things He gives you more fully. www outdoortruths.or www..outdoortruths.org Toms Lake AVAILABLE! AVAILABLE!
