Christian symbol Poinsettias This shrub, native to Mexico, is at the heart of a legend about a poor girl who wanted to bring Baby Jesus a gift one Christmas Eve. As she walked to church, she gathered a bouquet of weeds— which Jesus miraculously transformed into lovely red flowers. Thus the poinsettia (named for Joel Poinsett, the U.S. ambassador to Mexico who first brought the plant to America) is known in Mexico as la flor de la Nochebuena (flower of the Holy Night). The poinsettia is also an ideal Christmas symbol because its leaves turn red when deprived of sunlight and its flowers (the red inner buds) bloom in December. Office hours: 9-noon, Monday-Friday. Only a short time ago was Thanksgiving season, we all expressed being so thankful; then Christmas, where we celebrated the birthday of a King, born to die for us; in a few months we will envision the death, burial and resurrection of that King. What more could we give than a part of our time, once a week to worship in a church of our choice. You are always welcome to worship with us, hope to see you there. Faithful With Much At a Wednesday evening church meeting a very wealthy man rose to give his testimony. "I'm a millionaire," he said, "and I attribute it all to the rich blessings of God in my life. I can still remember the turning point in my faith, like it was yesterday: "I had just earned my first dollar and I went to a church meeting that night. The speaker was a missionary who told about his work. I knew that I only had a dollar bill and had to either give it all to God's work or nothing at all. So at that moment I decided to give my whole dollar to God. I believe that God blessed that decision, and that is why I am a rich man today." As he finished, it was clear that everyone had been moved by this man's story. But, as he took his seat, a little old lady sitting in the same pew leaned over and said: "Wonderful story. I dare you to do it again." "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future" (Jeremiah 29:11). "May he give you the desire of your heart and make all your plans succeed" (Psalm 20:4). Happy New Year. Roy Stilwell, Pastor Pam Lemond, Reporter Patok a Grove U.M. Church 1325 W. Co. Rd. 475 S. Winslow Church 9:30 a.m. and Sunday school 10:30 a.m. Paul writes in I Timothy 1:12-16, "How thankful I am to Christ Jesus our Lord for choosing me as one of his messengers, and giving me the strength to be faithful to him, even though I used to scoff at the name of Christ. I hunted down his people, harming them in every way I could. But God had mercy on me because I didn't know what I was doing, for I didn't know Christ at the time. Oh, how kind our Lord was, for he showed me how to trust him and be full of the love of Christ Jesus. "How true it is, and how I long that everyone should know it, that Jesus came into the world to save sinners and I was the greatest of them all. But God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as an example to show everyone how patient he is with even the worst of sinners, so that others will realize that they, too, can have everlasting life." Amazing grace, how sweet the sound, that saved a wretch like me. I once was lost, but now am found, was blind but now I see. CHURCH Sunday school 9:30 a.m. and morning worship 10:30 a.m. Everyone is always welcome. We want to thank God for His mercy, love and answered prayer. Continue to pray for one another, the unsaved, the prayer list, for all who are traveling, for the sick and needy, for the ones in hospitals and nursing homes, for the military and their families, our President and his family, and all decisions that are made. Continue to pray for our country and our religious freedoms. We want to extend our sympathy to anyone who has lost a loved one. Jesus and the Father are one. To refuse Jesus is to refuse God. Jesus is seated at the Father's right hand. He lives within our hearts and lives through the Holy Spirit. Sin doesn't fit a follower of Christ. He has forgiven us and is our Savior. He says we need to: receive, believe, obey, know, follow and love him. "Peace I leave with you... do not let your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid" (John 14:27). "When thou liest down, thou shalt not be afraid; yea, thou shalt lie down and thy sleep shall be sweet" (Proverbs 3:24). Remember: God gave us the most precious gift...the gift of Jesus. Thought: I said to the man at the gate of the year, "Give me a light that I may go forth into the unknown." And the man replied, "Put your hand into the hand of God. That shall be to you better than a light, safer than a known way." (A New Year's message from Britain's King George to his embattled people at the beginning of WWII). Have a safe and wonderful New Year. Dale Frederick, Pastor Lois K. Fowler, Reporter is already very muscular and strong. Sunday school lesson for Jan. 5—Honoring the Sabbath. Last week's trivia question and answer: The prophetess Anna was from which tribe? Answer: Luke 2:36. Next week's trivia question: After Jesus healed the withered hand of a man on the Sabbath, what was his next accomplished feat? Hint—Luke. January birthday wishes go to Mindy Wright, Whitney Norris, Khesha Bruner and Inez Satterfield. May God add His blessings to each of your special days. Mini message: Following tradition In the Jewish legal tradition, there were many activities forbidden on the Sabbath. The Pharisees were furious when Jesus and His followers harvested grain to eat and when Jesus healed the sick on the Sabbath. Jesus was appealing to the principle that human need is more important than human regulations and rules. The Pharisees thought that their religious system had all the answers for obtaining salvation. They could not accept Jesus because He did not fit into their system. Don't condemn somebody just because they possibly do things differently from you. Until next week—Remember the Creator is always greater than the creation. Saturday, Jan. 4, BJ Riley will be bringing the Word of God. Guidance The Word of God corrects us. That is a particularly interesting word. When flying to Florida, it seemed to me like a pretty straight shot from Chicago to Fort Lauderdale. But in the cockpit of the airplane is a finetuned radar mechanism. All during the trip, the plane is flown on automatic pilot, which continually yet imperceptibly corrects the course of the plane to keep it on track. That's what God's Word does for us. It nudges us to keep us on course. It keeps affecting the way we think, the way we draw conclusions, and the way we make our daily life decisions.
