"This will acknowledge the county is obligated to the City of Petersburg in the amount of $50,000 at this time," states the letter. The County Council ap- proved $50,000 for preliminary engineering. Petersburg had requested $850,000 for the complete project, but only $50,000 was approved, which was determined would keep the project on schedule. The next meeting will be at 8:30 a.m. Monday, Jan. 6 Jefferson Township Firemen gather at water's edge near the Homer Capehart bridge on Highway 257 over the White River as they searched for Kathryn McGill, who is still missing after being swept into the flood waters. Her husband Adam McGill was found and rescued from a tree downstream. H  Woman presumed dead after car swept into river Continued from page 1 deep. Englert said the McGills had to get out of the truck as it began sinking. Haywood said McGill's father reported the call to Pike County Central Dispatch at 7:43 a.m. According to Pike County Central Dispatch records Ron McGill got a call from his son saying he and his wife were stranded in high water. Ron McGill then drove to the area and couldn't find them. He then called 911 to report it. Haywood said searchers were concentrating on an area downstream of the bridge along a tree line. "The current running across the road and through that field flows back toward the river." He said crews searched all day Sunday until darkness and returned again on Monday. Englert said because of the corn stubble and debris in the area they were searching, they couldn't "drag" which hampered their recover efforts. Jefferson and Lockhart Township firemen and local volunteers searched along the edge of the water. Adam McGill was found in a tree about 2,000 feet down stream on the Pike County side at the end of CR 850 E. David Capehart said he lives on that road, so he took a Jefferson Township firemen down the road. When they saw McGill in a tree top surrounded by water, Capehart said duck hunters, who were in the area, came over to them and had to push their way through corn stalks in the water to get to McGill. He said they were able to get McGill out of the tree. McGill was transferred to St. Mary's Hospital in Evansville and treated for hypothermia. McGill is a Pike Central High School graduate and former resident of Pike County. The Daviess County Sheriff's Department's water rescue squad, along with DNR crews, searched the banks, did side scan sonar, canine searches, wading shallow water and dragging operations. As of late Monday, they had not located Kathryn McGill. Ohio Valley Search and Rescue, American Red Cross, Pike County Sheriff's Department, Daviess County Sheriff's Department, Jefferson Township Fire Department, Southwest Medical, Pike County EMS, Pike County EMA and Ohio Valley Search and Rescue assisted with the searches. Haywood said they are hopeful water levels of the White River will begin to fall, which should help with the search. The White River at Petersburg crested on Saturday at 24.4 feet, which puts it in the top 35 floods recorded at Petersburg, where flood stage is 16 feet. It was predicted to fall about a foot a day until Thursday, when it will start falling quickly. It is predicted to be at 12 feet on Saturday. "Conservation Officers strongly encourage obeying road closing signs and to avoid driving through flooded roadways," said Haywood. Highway 257 had been closed due to flooding since last weekend when nearly eight inches of rain created widespread flooding in southern and central Indiana.
